HOWARD LAKE, WAVERLY, WINSTED, DASSEL, COKATO, MN Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted High School (HLWW) and Dassel-Cokato High School (DC) are partnering for a third annual community symposium.
The event will take place Thursday, March 12 at Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted High School. Parents, community members, and interested others are encouraged to attend.
The community symposium will begin at 5:15 p.m. with a free dinner. Presentations will begin at 6 p.m. Child care will be offered.
Topics for the community symposium include “Social Media and Our Students,”and “Mental Health Warning Signs and Symptoms.”
Social media monitoring company, BARK (Bark.us) will assist by informing parents and community members about social media trends and related potential student impacts.
Representatives from the Central Minnesota Mental Health Center will inform participants about mental health topics that impact students. Warning signs of potential mental health problems will also be addressed.
Each presentation is approximately one hour long.
The evening symposium will follow a student symposium, which will take place during the school day March 12.
The student symposium will feature information from:
• Emily Program body image and eating disorders;
• NAMI National Alliance on Mental Illness; and
• MN Teen Challenge substance abuse.
Students will rotate through presentations from each organization in the morning.
In the afternoon, students will attend small group discussions. Toward the end of the school day, students will gather for a large group bonding event. Games and ice cream floats will bring the school day to a close.
Event organizers said the goal for the symposium is to spark conversations, and provide resources for students.
