Support life!

From: Linda Korhonen, Cokato

I think it is important for the citizens of our area, and America, to be informed of the great danger in the proposed bill called the “Freedom of Choice Act,” which President Obama has promised to sign into law. I think it would be more correctly called “The Forcing of Killing Act,” because of all the freedoms it will actually destroy.

Here are some of the horrible results if such a law was forced upon us:

• Eliminate every restriction on abortion nationwide.

• Force faith-based hospitals and Christian doctors to perform abortions.

• Make partial-birth abortion-killing legal again.

• Force taxpayer funding for abortions around the world.

• Would not allow women the right to know the truth about the facts, complications, and alternatives to abortion.

• Eliminate the rights of parents to be notified, for teen daughters.

Will it also be a crime for pastors/churches to speak against abortion?

Why is killing pre-born babies protected? The truth is: support for abortions is declining. More and more women are realizing the lifetime devastation it causes.

We must pray and do all we can to stop this. Write letters, e-mails, and call Washington. Say no to the Freedom of Choice Act.

Is a wooden nickel still change?

Curiosity has begun setting in on me over the last couple of weeks. I have come to expect hypocrisy and poor decisions from the GOP, it seems the DFL has felt left out.

President Obama’s first couple of weeks in office have been soiled with appointee after appointee being investigated or guilty of tax evasion. Seems the tax party has been having a tough time paying their taxes. Sounds unpatriotic to me, Joe.

First, it was Governor Richardson under investigation by a grand jury. Secondly, Timothy Giethner was discovered to have not paid some taxes over numerous years. Maybe not the best choice to oversee the IRS. Then, right after the DFL decides to turn the other cheek and appoint Giethner, pop goes the Daschle. Again, tax evasion by a taxer.

Obama and his supporters howled about the change and reform they would bring. Yet, where was the indignation over the appointees who couldn’t quite figure out how to pay their taxes.

Granted these can be viewed a simple mistake. Yes, that’s stretching, but I will give them the benefit of the doubt. These people all know that they are under intense scrutiny, though.

So, don’t you think that paying your taxes would be something that would be watched pretty close, making sure you don’t make any mistakes? Unless in Giethner’s case, where our leaders just look the other way and approve him anyway.

No question, with any such appointments these problems will arise, but especially in Giethner’s case – where was the change we heard so much about?

In my mind, change would mean one of these corrupt politicians would actually get punished for what they did. Perhaps an end to their careers shouldn’t entail just getting their job anyway, or going to a six-figure-a-year lobbying job.

How about the ridiculous story about the Wall Street executives who received $18 billion in bonuses, despite getting federal funds? The party that is always saying that we need to tax the rich and that everybody needs to get a fair shake seems to be not too interested in righting this wrong.

With Democrats essentially controlling our government, why not pull back any and all money that went to these banksters? Why not end future funding to these people?

This one I don’t agree with, but it’s been said – how about Congress passing a one-time tax on these bonuses of 100 percent? The reason I don’t agree with this is because taxation was never intended to dictate behavior.

Some examples of this would be how the left wants to put a massive tax on gasoline to discourage driving, ammunition tax to deter ammunition purchases, or higher taxes to redistribute wealth.

Then, we had all the cabinet appointees that managed to pay their taxes and not break the law; who essentially looked extremely similar to Bill Clinton’s Cabinet. Remember, “Change doesn’t come from Washington, it comes to Washington.”

Well, Mr. Obama you didn’t need to bring much luggage when you came to Washington, because it was already there.

Yes, Bill Clinton was the last Democrat president since Carter, but in a country of 300 million people he couldn’t find a couple dozen that didn’t serve under Bill Clinton.

Now, that has all been said, it’s all garbage. It essentially is what Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh will talk about for the next couple months. Or, at least until some other miniscule little misstep by the Obama administration occurs.

I think if we were in great financial standing, impeccable world standing, and if we had a secure country, these would be valid issues. Unfortunately, none of those are true and we have bigger fish to fry.

How about we look at important issues that will actually make our country a better place?

We need to end our membership in the world organizations and rebuild our country. We can’t do that when our first interest is the world. It needs to be the United States of America.

Foreign aid needs to cease until we are running budget surpluses, and only be restarted if the majority of our citizens vote to reenact aid.

Our borders need to be the most secure in the world. This should be easy when we stop defending the borders of other countries.

These issues aren’t being discussed, though. The closest thing we have to it is that people are finally talking about protecting Americans’ jobs with the new stimulus bill. For far too long free trade has just been accepted policy. Finally, another track is being discussed. Unfortunately, that is the only issue getting any light, though.

We do have some choices, though. We can continue debating and bickering over the couple bare bone issues the elites throw at us; personnel issues, association issues, abortion, gun control, and gay marriage.

Or, we can start demanding that something be done about what is actually killing this country. Our lax immigration policy, free trade ideology despite falling manufacturing jobs and stagnating wages, overstretching foreign policy, endless aid to despots, and spending that will cripple our future generations with no real results.

I wonder what we’ll do?

We need everyone to get on board

From: John Norman, Buffalo

It seems that our Republican politicians are attempting to decide whether they are part of the solution or part of the problem by the debate on the stimulus package. They are struggling to fit into the new order in Washington with the popular election of President Barack Obama and the voters’ overwhelming endorsement of his new policies. We need everyone to get on board now.

President Obama has extended his hand to the Republican power brokers in Washington, but so far they have only listened and positioned themselves to be able to say they voted against this stimulus package.

There are risks in this positioning. If the Obama administration obtains significant success, the Republicans will be marginalized even more. It is going to take some time to steer this “Titanic” economy into safe and friendly waters.

Hopefully, this rising economy will lift all boats.
