July typically one of deadliest months

From: Karla Heeter, Safe Communities of Wright County Board of Directors

July is typically one of the deadliest months of the year for traffic crashes in Minnesota – a big factor for this is motorists traveling at illegal or unsafe speeds.

In Wright County, 2006-2008, speed-related crashes accounted for 16 deaths. These tragedies cost Wright County and its residents more than $6 million every year.

To put the brakes on speed-related deaths and injuries, around 400 Minnesota law enforcement agencies will conduct enhanced speed enforcement patrols in July.

If the prospect of a violent crash doesn’t convince you to slow down, hopefully the cost of speeding ticket will. A typical ticket for driving 10 mph over the limit is $125.

Everyone, at one point or another, has driven over the speed limit. And while 5 mph over the limit may seem like no big deal, it’s important to realize that the slightest speed increase can translate a near miss to a serious collision.

For the safety of everyone on the road, do your part to keep our community safe – drive the posted speed limit and make it a habit to travel at safe speeds every time you get behind the wheel. Also, remember to wear your seat belt and drive sober.
