HLWW School District 2687 Board Minutes

Thursday, March 21, 2002 7:00 P.M.

The Special School Board Meeting of the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted ISD #2687 was called to order at 7:00 p.m. on March 21, 2002. After the Pledge of allegiance, roll was taken with members present: James Raymond, Charles Weber, Ken Zimmerman, Charlie Borrell, James Fowler, John Lideen, Eugene Lorentz. Also present were Superintendent Riley Hoheisel, Principals Julie Millerbernd, Mike Day and Dean Wessman.

Chair Raymond opened the floor to approve the Agenda of the March 21, 2002 Special School Board Meeting. Weber motioned to approve the change to the agenda as follows: item 4 to be first, then item 2, item 3, item 5, item 1, and item 6; Fowler seconded; passed unanimously.

(Item 1) Each Board member had an opportunity to identify what criteria they wanted.

After the criteria was discussed, a Board Member reminded the Board that we set policy and the Superintendent does the job after we hire them; no micro managers!

(Item 2) Setting dates: The date for the Superintendent interviews will be Wednesday, April 3, 2002.

(Item 3) Questions and Salary Range: there will be up to 30 questions. There was concern as to how to approve the salary range if he/she is offered the job. The MC will be Jim Raymond, consistency to each candidate regarding questions.

Lorentz motioned to add one additional candidate to the list who was a late applicant; Fowler seconded; passed unanimously.

(Item 4) Process for involvement of administration, and staff input. A principal and a teacher will be allowed to have input on the selection, if they desire, provided they attend all the interviews.

(Item 5) Candidate selection: There are six candidates selected to interview. Raymond will call all six to schedule the times. The date for the interviews will be Wednesday, April 3, 2002, in the Howard Lake High School Auditorium. Raymond suggested having a second list to pull from if one of the original candidates withdraws. Raymond also suggested giving a ranking in order of choice to be considered. After calls are made, a follow up letter will be sent to each candidate being interviewed. A community tour of all the buildings will be given by Mary Pettit or Vivian Mahlstedt. Borrell said he had frequent flyer miles he would be willing to transfer to help offset the cost of the out of state candidate.

(Item 6) A written question will be sent to all interview candidates, which will need to be submitted in writing the day of the interviews. The question is as follows:

In an attempt to improve your administrative skills, what have you done about your own professional development?

The Board will attempt to act, and have a candidate selected and have a signed contract by the April 15, 2002 School Board Meeting.

Zimmerman moved to adjourn the meeting; Lorentz seconded; adjourned at 9:00 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

James A. Fowler, Clerk
