HLWW School District 2687 Board Minutes

Monday, June 16, 2003 8:00 P.M.



The Regular School Board Meeting of the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted ISD #2687 was called to order at 8:00 p.m. on June 16, 2003.  After the Pledge of Allegiance, roll was taken with members present: James Fowler, Ken Zimmerman, Jim Raymond, Al Doering, Charlie Borrell, and Charles Weber.  John Lideen was absent.  Also present were Superintendent George Ladd, architect Lee Meyer from KKE, and Kristin Hanson from Ehlers; and Board Secretary Marilyn Greeley.

Chair Raymond opened the floor to consider approving the agenda of the June 16, 2003 Regular School Board meeting. Fowler motioned to approve the agenda; Zimmerman seconded; passed unanimously.

Zimmerman motioned to approve the minutes of the May 20, 2003 Regular School Board meeting; Doering seconded; passed unanimously.

Weber motioned to approve the minutes of the June 4, 2003 Special School Board meeting; Zimmerman seconded; passed unanimously.

Weber motioned to approve the June bills; Zimmerman seconded; passed unanimously.

Zimmerman motioned to approve the June Treasurer's report; Fowler seconded; passed unanimously.

Principal Day reported:

· Day thanked all who participated in the graduation ceremony.  It went very well.

· $26,000 was handed out in scholarships this year.

· The end of the year concerts and banquets were great.

· Congratulations to the baseball team who are the state champions!

· Thank you to the Letter Club who put on a welcome home for our baseball team.

· Change in open house date for high school from October 2nd to October 6th.

Principal Wessman reported: June 5th, 70 students went to Valleyfair because they met all of their goals for the year. We are in the process of ordering curriculum for next year. June 30th there will be a report from the State coming out on which schools are underperforming in the state.  We are not one of them. At the July meeting Wessman will report on the future of the profiles of learning.

Principal Millerbernd reported: The end of the year was very positive. Summer School has started and will run for 4 weeks, Monday thru Thursday. The recognition breakfast and program on June 9th was very nice.

Communications: Ladd reviewed communications.

Requests from the public: none

(Item 1) Lee Meyer from KKE gave a facilities update.  The Board reviewed and discussed the facilities.

(Item 2) Ladd reviewed the 2003-2004 budget.  Zimmerman motioned to approve the 2003-2004 budget with a review of the staff development reductions; Borrell seconded; passed unanimously.

(Item 3) Kristin Hanson from Ehlers presented information on the operating levy.  Weber motioned to accept the learning levy of $525 per pupil unit; Fowler seconded; passed unanimously.

(Item 4) Kristin Hanson from presented information about ballot wording.

(Item 5) Zimmerman motioned to approve calling for bakery, dairy, snowplowing, and waste removal bids; Borrell seconded; passed unanimously.

(Item 6) Zimmerman motioned to approve the resignation of Mr. Robinson, and accept termination of 2hr. dishwasher position; Weber seconded; passed unanimously.

(Item 7) Weber motioned to approve the employment of Jason Kuehn as an elementary teacher, and Jennifer Mielke as 5th grade one-year long term sub for Pat Weseloh; Zimmerman seconded; passed unanimously.

(Item 8) Raymond read the following recognitions:

The School Board recognizes Mr. Roux and the HLWW School Jazz Band for their outstanding performance at the employee recognition breakfast on June 9th.  Thank you for giving up your first Monday morning after school was out to come in to play for us.  You all did a wonderful job.

The School Board recognizes the players and coaches of the Section 4A champions Laker Baseball team.  The Lakers won the Sub-Section by beating Mayer Lutheran to advance to the Section Finals.  They had to win the best 2 out of 3 to advance to the State Tournament.  The Lakers won the next two games beating St. Bernards 5-0, and 8-6.  They won their first two games in the State tournament, and played for the State Championship on Friday evening, against WIN-E-MAC.  Congratulations Lakers!

Doering motioned to approve the recognitions, Fowler seconded; passed unanimously.

(Item 9) Superintendent reports:

· We had an administrative retreat today.  We reviewed goals, which we will bring to the board at a later date.

· Next Regular School Board Meeting ­ July 21, 2003

· Building and Grounds meeting ­ June 23, 2003 10am to noon.

· Teacher Negotiations, July 16, 2003.

· You should have received information from Ehlers and MREA on a legislative update

Zimmerman moved to adjourn the meeting; Weber seconded; adjourned at 9:57 pm.
