The March 12, 2012 Regular School Board meeting of the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted ISD#2687 was called to order at 6:02 pm. by Chairman Schaible. After the pledge of allegiance, roll was taken with the following members present: Schaible, Heuer, Wiech, Tintes, Weber, and Weibel; Kocher arrived at 6:05pm. Also present were Principals Mike Day, and Jim Schimelpfenig; Superintendent Brad Sellner, SMS Financial Consultant Bill Menozzi, and Board Secretary Marilyn Greeley.
(Item IV) Schaible reported the high school custodial hire needs to complete the background check process. Heuer motioned to approve the agenda with the change; Wiech seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VI) There were no questions or comments from visitors.
(Item VII) Schaible reviewed the items in the consent agenda.
Wiech motioned to approve the consent agenda which included minutes from the February 13, 2012 Regular School Board meeting, March bills, enrollment, the resignation of Denise Hertzog as part time food service assistant effective March 16, 2012; Rosemary Weber as a paraprofessional; and rescind original retirement and approve retirement of Michael Day with the correction of June 30, 2012 as the retirement effective date; the employment of Kathy Welman as a paraprofessional effective October 1, 2011, was missed in October; Richard Lee as the high school evening custodial position due to an internal transfer; and Dana Pearson as the SAC Supervisor position, replacing Harriet Confeld, effective March 12, 2012; Communications: Elementary News, and a thank you card; and the following recognitions:
The School Board recognizes the following coaches who were selected as HLWW’s CMC “Coach of the Year” nominees: Chad Gagnon, Wade Moravec, Jeff Goudy, and Brook Thrall. Congratulations on your nomination.
The School Board recognizes the numerous volunteers and special guests who read to students at the elementary buildings during the month of February. Thank you for taking time from your day to promote the importance of reading, as well as reinforcing the importance of being involved in a child’s education. We appreciate your partnership and support!
The School Board recognizes the Waverly Lions who donated $300 to the Middle School Crossing Guards program. Thank you for your continued support of the district.
The School Board recognizes the following section Girls Basketball players of the year: Abby Miller, Mackenzie Uter and Heather Lehner and also section coach of the year Jason Kuehn. Congratulations to everyone.
The School Board recognizes Dr. Stangl, a Buffalo Dentist for the dental health visits/presentations to Humphrey Elementary first grade students, and Jolie Holland for arranging the visit. Thank you for sharing your time and the importance of dental care.
The School Board recognizes Jenny Gray and the Gentle Dental staff in Winsted for opening their doors to Winsted K-2 students for the opportunity to tour the office, equipment and promoting dental health. Thank you for creating time to build the community connections, and for sharing your talents.
The School Board recognizes the Elementary music staff, Jana LeClaire and Dawn Kalvig, 3rd and 4th grade students, families and volunteers who made the two recent musical shows, The Granny Awards by Winsted Elementary and It’s Saturday by Humphrey Elementary, a success. And full house presentations as well!! Kudos for your performances and your hard work. Thanks too, to Adam Koeppe for his work with videotaping the programs.
The School Board recognizes Kelly Smith and the Redlodge Grille in Waverly for the reading incentive program offered during I Love to Read month. Thank you for your generosity and for helping promote a lifelong skill of reading.
The School Board recognizes Alissa Amland, Mike Day and the 40+ students who made a commitment to the elementary schools for I Love to Read month. The elementary students and staff appreciate the time given to them, and the cross grade level connections. Thanks for making a difference!!
Tintes seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. A) Wiech motioned to approve the treasurer’s report; Heuer seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. B) Wiech motioned to approve the request for RFQ’s for audit services; Tintes seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. C) Allyson Kuehn, MAWSECO Special Ed Director, gave a brief presentation and overview.
(Item VII, Subd. D) Heuer motioned to hold the 2012-13 graduation on Sunday June 2, 2013; Weber seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. E) Superintendent Sellner gave an update on the Safe Schools training and the Alert Now system. Principal Schimelpfenig gave an update on I Observation.
(Item VII, Subd. F) Schaible reviewed that we are asking for approval to acknowledge the district is moving forward with a building project.
Wiech motioned to approve the request to consider plans for a building project; Weibel seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. G) Wiech reviewed the building project consultant agreement.
(Item VII, Subd. H) Wiech motioned to approve the handbook changes for the 2012-13 school year; Tintes seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VIII, Subd. A) Principal Day gave a brief report.
Principal Schimelpfenig gave a brief report.
(Item VIII, Subd. B) There were no committee updates.
(Item VIII, Subd. C) Superintendent Sellner gave a brief report.
