HLWW School District 2687 Board Minutes

The May 13, 2013 Regular School Board meeting of the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted ISD #2687 was called to order at 6:02pm. by Chairman Schaible. After the pledge of allegiance, roll was taken with the following members present: Schaible, Kocher, Smith, Weibel, Tintes, Wiech, and Heuer. Also present were Superintendent Brad Sellner, Principals Jason Mix, and Jennifer Olson and Board Secretary Marilyn Greeley.
(Item IV) Wiech motioned to approve the agenda; Heuer seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item V) There were no questions or comments from visitors
(Item VI) Heuer motioned to approve the consent agenda which included the April 8, 2013 Regular Board Meeting minutes, April 29, 2013 Work Session Meeting minutes, May Bills, May Enrollment, unpaid leave for Kim Jones through the 2013-14 school year; the resignation of Tricia Johnson as the high school Band Instructor effective the end of the 2012-13 school year; and the retirement of Mary Robinson as the high school Athletic Director Secretary effective June 29, 2013, the employment of Kassandra Gibbons as the MS/HS Art Teacher effective 2013-14 school year replacing June Egberg; Sara Varner as the Spanish Teacher effective 2013-14 school year replacing Ellen Sivright; Andy Hertwig as MS PE/Health/DAPE Teacher effective 2013-14 school year replacing Tom Hoeg; Danielle Miller as a Speech-Language Pathologist effective the 2013-14 school year replacing Jane Bayerl; and Sara Minnich as AM SAC Supervisor and additional hours as needed, effective April 4, 2013, lane change for Melanie Lawrence from BA to BA15 retroactive to March 20th, Elementary News, Resource Training & Solutions Communicator, and the following recognitions:
The School Board recognizes the PIE Committee for donating $1,830 for books for the middle school media center and classrooms. Thank you for your donation and support of the school district.
The School Board recognizes HLWW FFA Advisor Jim Weninger, for being inducted into the Minnesota FFA Hall of Fame April 29, 2013. Congratulations Mr. Weninger on this honor and thank you for your dedication to the school district and FFA program
Wiech seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. A) Heuer motioned to approve the curriculum reports; Weibel seconded; Tintes abstained; passed by majority vote.
(Item VII, Subd. B) Wiech motioned to approve the treasurer’s report; Heuer seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. C) Schaible indicated the Budget Committee recommends waiting to approve a Construction Management firm until June, due to the Building Bond Election next week.
(Item VII, Subd. D) Wiech motioned to increase lunch prices by ten cents; Heuer seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. E) Weibel motioned to adopt the resolution relating to the non-renewal/termination of probationary teacher Amber Gunderson; Smith seconded; those in favor: Kocher, Smith, Weibel, Tintes, Wiech, Heuer and Schaible; opposed: none; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. F) Wiech motioned the for district to use staff development days to make up for the two additional snow days from April, with one staff development day as a floating day to be used by staff over the summer with approval from their building principal; Tintes seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. G) Wiech motioned to approve the Paraprofessional contract; Smith seconded; Tintes abstained; passed by majority vote.
(Item VII, Subd. H) Superintendent Sellner reviewed the coach’s evaluation process, and indicated we will be asking for approval at the June board meeting.
(Item VII, Subd. I) Superintendent Sellner reviewed the controlled access proposals to school entrances.
(Item VII, Subd. J) The consensus of the board was to hold a Special Board Meeting to canvass election results on Tuesday May 28, 2013 at 6pm in lieu of the work session.
(Item VII, Subd. K) The Policy Committee recommends the first reading on the following policies: 206-Visitor Comment Guidelines; and 516-Student Medication.
(Item VIII, Subd. A) Principal Schimelpfenig report was hand carried.
Principal Mix gave a report.
Principal Olson gave a report.
(Item VIII, Subd. B) Each board member gave a brief committee update.
(Item VIII, Subd. C) Superintendent Sellner gave a report.
(Item IX) Next Meeting Dates:
Work Session Meeting - Tuesday May 28, 2013 6pm HLWW HS Media Center, we will hold a special board meeting to canvass election results.
