The February 10, 2014 Regular School Board meeting of the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted ISD #2687 was called to order at 6:08 p.m.. by Chairman Schaible. After the pledge of allegiance, roll was taken with the following members present: Schaible, Weibel, Wiech, and Heuer; Tintes and Smith were absent; Kocher arrived at 6:24 p.m.. Also present were Superintendent Brad Sellner, Principals Jason Mix, Jim Schimelpfenig, and Jennifer Olson, and Board Secretary Marilyn Greeley.
(Item IV) Schaible reported the following changes to the agenda: remove item XI; and an additional resignation of para Mary Lundeen-Judd effective 2-10-14 to the consent agenda; and a treasurer report. Wiech motioned to approve the agenda with the changes; Heuer seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item V) Charlie Bush asked the district to get more information from the community, local manufacturers, etc. about jobs in the area. The district should also emphasize ethics, being a person of character, and to have more lyceums.
(Item VI) Heuer motioned to approve the consent agenda which included the January 6, 2014 regular board meeting minutes, February bills, enrollment, school board committee assignments, the resignation of Janet Perry, as a health assistant para at Humphrey Elementary and the high school effective February 7, 2014, Kristin Voggelpohl as a SAC Supervisor effective February 7, 2014, Amy Thompson as a para at Winsted Elementary, retirement of Dale Decker as Athletic Director effective the end of the 2013-14 school year, resignation of high school para Mary Lundeen-Judd effective 2-10-14, employment of Amy Thompson as the counselor secretary at the high school effective January 27, 2014, Kayti Heber as the health para at the high school and Humphrey Elementary effective February 6, 2014, Joseph Kadlec as a regular route van driver effective January 6, 2014, replacing Gene Birkholz, and Katrina Clark as morning and afternoon SAC Supervisor at Waverly effective February 10, 2014 for morning and February 24, 2014 for afternoon, Communications: Elementary Laker News, Resource Training and Solutions Communicator, and a thank you card from Lacy Detlefsen, and the following recognitions:
The School Board recognizes Officer Derek Szczepanik for going above and beyond the call of duty on January 21, 2014 at the high school. Thank you Officer Derek.
The School Board recognizes the Winsted American Legion Auxiliary Post 407 for providing a dinner for teachers on Thursday January 30, 3014. Thank you for your donation to the school district.
The School Board recognizes Dura Supreme for donating $2,500 to the district. Thank you for your generosity and continued support of the school district.
The School Board recognizes the 2014 Snowfest royalty: King-Alex Smith, Queen-Megan Stueven, Prince-Dylan Youngren, and Princess-Lexie Leukuma. Congratulations to all of you and best of luck in the future.
The School Board recognizes Mackenzie Uter on scoring her 1,000th career point! Congratulations Mackenzie, keep up the good work.
The School Board is proud to announce the inaugural class of inductees to the HLWW Hall of Fame. The inductees elected are: Lee Kaltved, Steve Gagnon, Tiffany Ogle, Mike Holtz and Merrill Skinner. Candidates were nominated based on the criteria of school involvement, post-secondary achievements, community service and character. Congratulations to all the inductees and thank you for your commitment to the school district and the community.
The School Board recognizes Al Doering for donating a computer table. Thank you for your donation to the school district.
Wiech seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. A) Ray Przekaurat, Wright Tech Center Director, spoke about the Wright Tech Center; why it’s important, and why we should send students to the facility.
(Item VII, Subd. B) Principal Mix reported how the Chrome Books project is going for the freshman students. Jeff Granrud, High School Math teacher and Jesse Robertson, Integration Technology teacher also spoke about how the Chrome Books are working for the students, and staff.
(Item VII, Subd. C) Jim Wilson, SGN/Wendel Architect, gave an updated on the middle school project and reviewed the upcoming time line. Jason Peterson, from Kraus Anderson, also reviewed the time line.
(Item VII, Subd. D) Wiech motioned to approve the treasurer’s report; Heuer seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. E) Superintendent Sellner reviewed the school closings and proposed make up days. The board discussed several options. Heuer motioned to add student and staff days of February 17 & April 18 and cancel the late start on April 23; Kocher seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. F) Each principal reviewed the proposed handbook changes for the 2014-15 school year. Superintendent Sellner asked since there were only minimal changes this year would we want to approve the handbooks tonight.
Wiech motioned to approve the handbooks with the changes; Weibel seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. H) Superintendent Sellner asked the board to review the policy updates, there were not many changes.
(Item VII, Subd. G) Superintendent Sellner reviewed the proposed 2014-15 school calendars. The board discussed each option.
Heuer motioned to approve the 2014-15 calendar version 2 as is with February 13, 16, and June 5 as school closing make up days; Wiech seconded; those in favor: Kocher, Wiech, Heuer, and Kocher; opposed: Weibel; passed by majority.
(Item VIII, Subd. A) Principal Olson gave a report.
Principal Schimelpfenig gave a report.
Principal Mix gave a report.
(Item VIII, Subd. B) Each board member gave a committee update.
(Item VIII, Subd. C) Superintendent Sellner gave a report.
(Item X) Next Meeting Dates:
