BOARD OF EDUCATION REGULAR MEETING

The August 11, 2014 Regular School Board meeting of the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted ISD #2687 was called to order at 6:05 pm. by Chairman Schaible. After the pledge of allegiance, roll was taken with the following members present: Schaible, Heuer, Wiech, Tintes, Smith and Kocher. Also present were Superintendent Brad Sellner, Principals Jason Mix, Jim Schimelpfenig, and Jennifer Olson, and Board Secretary Marilyn Greeley.
(Item IV) Wiech motioned to appoint Paul Bravinder to fill the school board member vacancy position; Tintes seconded; passed unanimously.
Schaible administered the oath of office to newly appointed school board member Paul Bravinder. The board welcomed Paul Bravinder to the school board.
(Item V) Schaible reported there is additional information, bills, MSBA notice, Broadcast Club information, board member appearances schedule, and Superintendent Sellner will give an update on MAWSECO; and to switch Item C and D around. Heuer motioned to approve the agenda with the changes; Smith seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VI) There were no questions or comments from visitors.
(Item VII) Tintes motioned to approve the consent agenda which included the July 14, 2014 regular board meeting minutes, July 28, 2014 Work Session meeting minutes, August 4, 2014 Special meeting minutes, August bills, the retirement of Connie Laney, Food Service Worker, effective July 29, 2014, resignation from Katrina Clark, SAC Supervisor, effective August 22, 2014, employment of Jessica Bogdan as a reading extension teacher at Humphrey Elementary effective the 2014-15 school year; and Rhonda Houston as a .3 FTE Elementary Art teacher effective the 2014-15 school year, the second reading of policy 514-Bullying, the following contracts: Custodians, Food Service Director, Food Service Workers, Head Cooks/Cashier, Preschool Teachers, Para’s, and District Office, and the following recognitions:
The School Board recognizes HLWW students recently crowned in local city celebrations: Waverly Ambassadors Shelby Ogle and Darya Karas were crowned during the Waverly Daze coronation. Congratulations to both of you, and good luck in the future.
The School Board recognizes Zach Arvidson from Elicit Design for donating $400 to the HLWW Public Schools art department. Thank you for your donation and continued support Zach.
Wiech seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VIII, Subd. A) Rob Gemelke, from Kraus Anderson, gave an update on the progress of the middle school building project.
(Item VIII, Subd. B) Superintendent Sellner reported MAWSECO and Ehlers is still doing some research. Sellner indicated all member district of MAWSECO are on board to move forward with the proposal.
(Item VIII, Subd. D) Heuer motioned to approve the resolution authorizing a new board approved referendum authority in the amount of approximately $4.24; Wiech seconded; roll call vote: those in favor: Tintes, Wiech, Heuer, Bravinder, Smith, Kocher and Schaible; opposed: none; passed unanimously.
(Item VIII, Subd. C) Wiech motioned to approve the treasurer’s report; Smith seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VIII, Subd. E) Heuer motioned to approve the resolution relating to election of school board members and calling the election; Wiech seconded; roll call vote: those in favor: Kocher, Smith, Bravinder, Tintes, Wiech, Heuer and Schaible; opposed: none; passed unanimously.
(Item VIII, Subd. F) Smith motioned to approve the resolution calling a special election to fill a vacancy; Wiech seconded; roll call vote: those in favor: Tintes, Wiech, Heuer, Kocher, Smith, Bravinder, and Schaible; opposed: none; passed unanimously.
(Item VIII, Subd. G) Principal Schimelpfenig reported the teacher group is requesting to have peers to formally train to do some observations, more clarification on the transition process of developing rubrics while the process is being developed.
(Item VIII, Subd. H) Superintendent Sellner reviewed the request for additional district office staff, and indicated we are looking to see if we can fill the position from within.
(Item VIII, Subd. I) Superintendent Sellner discussed the replacement request for music department equipment, and indicated there will be more details coming.
(Item VIII, Subd. J) Heuer motioned to approve the KLKS Broadcasting Club with the advisor salary range $12,000-$14,000 and equipment purchases of $8,000, subject to activity fees; Tintes seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VIII, Subd. K) Superintendent Sellner reviewed the list of potential appearances for board members.
(Item VIII, Subd. L) The Policy Committee recommends the first reading of the following policies: 410-Family & Medical Leave, 413-Harrassment & Violence, 414-Mandated Reporting of Child Neglect, 415-Mandated Reporting of Maltreatment, 506-Student Discipline, 522-Student Sex Nondiscrimination, 524-Internet Acceptable Use, 616-School District System Accountability.
(Item IX, Subd. A) Principal Olson gave a report.
Principal Schimelpfenig gave a report.
Principal Mix gave a report.
(Item IX, Subd. B) Each board member gave a committee update.
(Item IX, Subd. C) Superintendent gave a report.
(Item X) Next meeting dates:
