BOARD OF EDUCATION WORK SESSION MEETING
Monday, March 23, 2015
HLWW HS Media Center
The March 23, 2015 Regular School Board meeting of the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted ISD #2687 was called to order at 6:01 p.m. by Chairperson Wiech. After the pledge of allegiance, roll was taken with the following members present: Wiech, Heuer, Tintes, Bush, Diers, and Kocher; Bravinder arrived at 6:03 p.m. Also present were Superintendent Brad Sellner, Principals Jason Mix, Jim Schimelpfenig, and Jennifer Olson, Activities Director Scott Berning, Community Education Director Margaret Marketon, Elementary Dean of Students Kelli Westling, and Board Secretary Marilyn Greeley.
(Item IV) Tintes motioned to approve the agenda; Heuer seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item V, Subd. A) Superintendent Sellner reviewed the preliminary 2015-16 budget reductions. Sellner reported they will be meeting with directors on Friday to review budgets, and asked the board if there was anything else to be considered for the 2015-16 school year. The board discussed the 2015-16 budget. Sellner indicated the 2015-16 budget will be brought to the April meeting for approval.
(Item V, Subd. B) Superintendent Sellner, Activities Director Scott Berning and Community Ed Director Margaret Marketon reviewed the Facility Use Policy. The board discussed the changes to the policy, and requested information about what groups are currently using the facilities.
(Item V, Subd. C) Superintendent Sellner reviewed the information regarding letter jacket options. Principal Mix also indicated he has talked to some of the students and like the idea of updating the letter jacket and academic letter on the jacket. Sellner asked the board if they would like to move forward with this idea. The consensus of the board was to move forward with the idea of updating the letter jacket and academic letter on the jacket.
(Item V, Subd. D) Superintendent Sellner suggested the board should consider not charging for concerts as it is part of the academic day. The consensus of the board was to build this into the budget which will be presented in April to see the impact.
(Item V, Subd. E) Bush asked the board to consider recognizing students in areas other than academics and athletics. Sellner said the middle school and elementary schools have students of the month recognitions. Principal Schimelpfenig and Olson indicated they have a nomination process and four to five students are chosen each month for recognition other than academics and athletics. Principal Mix also indicated the high school sends out a lot of information on social media. Mix also reported he meets and talks to students about their accomplishments and builds a rapport and connection with them. Bravinder said it’s happening at the middle and elementary schools; we just need to formalize it at the high school.
(Item V, Subd. F) The board discussed grades, GPA, and honor roll. Principal Schimelpfenig indicated instruction is not the same now as it was several years ago; students learn at different paces. Schimelpfenig reported all staff is using the same grading system. Mix said grades are based upon content knowledge not behaviors; can they get their work done on time and do they know the content.

(Item VI, Subd. C) Superintendent Sellner gave a report.
Wiech reminded the board members to turn in committee reports to Marilyn by the first.
