|BOARD OF EDUCATION WORK SESSION MEETING

The May 26, 2015 School Board Work Session meeting of the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted ISD #2687 was called to order at 6:00p.m. by Chairperson Wiech. After the pledge of allegiance, roll was taken with the following members present: Wiech, Heuer, Tintes, Bush, Diers, Bravinder and Kocher. Also present were Superintendent Brad Sellner, Principals Jason Mix, Jim Schimelpfenig, and Jennifer Olson, and Board Secretary Marilyn Greeley.
(Item IV) Superintendent Sellner requested to add two items to the agenda; Item E-continued discussion about letter jackets; and Item F-possible hire consideration.
Diers motioned to approve the agenda with the additions; Tintes seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item V, Subd. A) Curriculum Director Jason Mix reviewed the curriculum reports.
(Item V, Subd. B) Superintendent Sellner updated the board about the empty lot.
(Item V, Subd. C) Superintendent Sellner asked the board to review the first reading of policy 427-Workload Limits for Certain Special Ed Teachers.
(Item V, Subd. D) Superintendent Sellner asked the board if they had any ideas about renaming the Old Middle School Building. Tintes suggested naming it after a retired educator. Sellner said Community Education Director Margaret Marketon suggested HLWW Educational Learning Center. The Principals suggested Humphrey Hall. Sellner said we have some time yet.
(Item V, Subd. E) Principal Mix reported he sent out a survey to students about letter jackets. Mix reported the students were split on the color of the jacket, however recommends the navy blue jacket with tan sleeves. Mix also indicated the students preferred the letter patch to be in the shape of an L with HLWW Lakers stitched on it. Mix indicated he would like to move forward with the navy blue jackets with tan sleeves and the L letter. The consensus of the board was to move forward with phasing in the new jacket and letter and look into buying out the current stock from Carol Hayner who embroiders the jackets. Sellner suggested to bring this back to the June meeting for final approval.
(Item V, Subd. F) Superintendent Sellner asked the board to consider approving the hire of the sixth grade teacher and head wrestling coach so we can have the person come in to meet the high school, middle school and youth wrestlers so they can put a face with the name before school is out.
Heuer motioned to approve hiring Joe Puncochar for both the sixth grade teacher opening and head wrestling coach position; Kocher seconded; those in favor: Heuer, Tintes, Bravinder, Diers, Kocher and Wiech; opposed: Bush; passed by majority.
(Item VI, Subd. A) Principal Mix gave a report.
Principal Olson gave a report.
Principal Schimelpfenig gave a report.
(Item VI, Subd. B) Superintendent Sellner reviewed some items for the open house regarding trophies, memorial plaques, asbestos abatement and open house for the new middle school.
Bush indicated he would like to discuss what we do at work sessions. Wiech responded we always say to contact the Superintendent if there is something you want to add. Bush also indicated he is not being paid. Wiech responded she sent him an e-mail regarding pay. Bush said he does not look at e-mail. Wiech said she would call him to discuss it.
