The September 14, 2015 Regular School Board meeting of the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted ISD #2687 was called to order at 6:06 p.m. by Chairperson Wiech. After the pledge of allegiance, roll was taken with the following members present: Wiech, Heuer, Tintes, Diers, Bravinder and Kocher; absent: Bush. Also present were Superintendent Brad Sellner, and Board Secretary Marilyn Greeley.
(Item IV) Wiech reported there is an additional resignation of head girls golf coach Brooke Thrall for the consent agenda.
Bravinder motioned to approve the agenda with the addition; Tintes seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item V) There were no questions or comments from visitors.
(Item VI) Heuer motioned to approve the consent agenda which included the August 10, 2015 regular board meeting minutes, August 24, 2015 work session meeting minutes, September bills, enrollment, medical leave of absence for Sue Winge thru November 1, 2015, the resignations of Lisa Pauna as a para effective August 13, 2015, and Brooke Thrall as head girls golf coach, the following employment recommendations: Laura Bishop as an elementary teacher at Humphrey Elementary effective the 2015-16 school year, filling the extended leave for Angie Pittman; April Kalal as a Kindergarten teacher at Winsted Elementary effective the 2015-16 school year; Mindy Loge as a Para at Humphrey Elementary, and Steve Gagnon as a noon route bus driver effective September 1, 2015 replacing Carollynn MontesDeoca, the second reading and approval of the following annual policies: 410 Family and Medical Leave Policy; 413 Harassment and Violence; 414 Mandated Reporting of Child Neglect or Physical or Sexual Abuse; 415 Mandated Reporting of Maltreatment of Vulnerable Adults; 506 Student Discipline; 514 Bullying Prohibition Policy; 522 Student Sex Nondiscrimination; 524 Internet Acceptable Use and Safety Policy; 616 School District System Accountability; 806 Crisis Management Policy, thank you from Pam Petersen family, and the following recognitions:
The School Board recognizes Kendell Kubasch and The Mid-Minnesota Concert Band for their participation and playing for the middle school open house. Thank you very much for your participation and commitment in making the middle school open house a success.
The School Board recognizes Adam & Andrea Koeppe and members of the First Presbyterian Church of Howard Lake for their donation of school supplies. Thank you for your donation to the school district.
The School Board recognizes Mike Max of WCCO Radio/TV for coming out to speak on Monday, August 3, for our fall meeting with parents and activity students. His message was very positive and motivating. Thank you for your support of our students, parents and staff.
The School Board recognizes Flagship Insurance for the flowers we received for the new middle school open house. They were a wonderful addition in recognition of our new facility.
The School Board recognizes Kyla Mauk who was recently crowned as the 62nd Princess Kay of the Milky Way. Congratulations Kyla and best of luck with your future.
The School Board recognizes family, staff and the teachers union for donating to the Ms. Jones Literacy Fund totaling $2,565. In addition we thank Michael Johnson of Webster New York for his donation and Bill Jones of Minneapolis and Karen Jones of Nebraska for setting up the Literacy Fund to benefit the district. Thank you to all those who donated in honor of Kim.
Tintes seconded; Diers asked why there was a $303,000 check voided. Sellner responded it was a check that was destroyed in the mail and had to be reissued; motion passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. A) Rob Gemelke, from Kraus Anderson, gave an update on the middle school project, and indicated things are wrapping up.
(Item VII, Subd. B) The board discussed the parking lot project and whether to use crushed granite or have it paved. The consensus of the board was to stay with what was originally planned.
(Item VII, Subd. C) Heuer motioned to approve the maximum certification of the proposed 2015 payable 2016 Property Levy; Bravinder seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. D) Tintes motioned to approve the treasurer’s report; Heuer seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. E) Heuer motioned to approve a six hour per week custodial position; Kocher seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. F) Heuer motioned to approve the teacher evaluation plan; Diers seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. G) Wiech explained that we have a board member representative each school year to meet periodically with the building principal at each site. Wiech said since Mr. Bush is not here the members can let Superintendent Sellner know and he will gather the information and let everyone know who will be the representative for each school. Kocher indicated she would take the high school, Diers said he would take Winsted Elementary, Heuer said she would take Humphrey Elementary and Bravinder said he would take the middle school unless Bush wanted it.
(Item VII, Subd. H) Superintendent Sellner reported there is a tentative agreement with the Teacher Union for the 2015-17 contract and will be brought to the October meeting for approval.
(Item VIII, Subd. A) Wiech indicated the principal reports are attached.
(Item VIII, Subd. B) Superintendent Sellner reported: Everything went really well for the first week of school; our only concern is that we don’t have enough bus drivers.
(Item VIII, Subd. C) Wiech indicated the school board committee reports are included to review.
