The January 25, 2016 School Board Work Session meeting of the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted ISD #2687 was called to order at 6:02 p.m.. by Chairperson Wiech. After the pledge of allegiance, roll was taken with the following members present: Wiech, Heuer, Bush, Diers, and Kocher; absent: Bravinder. Also present were Superintendent Brad Sellner, Principals Jason Mix, Jim Schimelpfenig, and Jennifer Olson, and Board Secretary Marilyn Greeley.
(Item IV) Diers motioned to approve the agenda; Kocher seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item V, Subd. A) Elizabeth Benson and Deb Peterson counselors from Solace Counseling Associates reviewed their counseling services and their partnership with the district.
(Item V, Subd. B) Wiech indicated Bush wanted to discuss newspapers in the commons. Bush suggested having copies of the papers in the commons for students to read. Mix said the Star Tribune and the Herald Journal are in the media center. Wiech reported the media center is where the students go to get that information. Mix reported if students are reading it they are looking at the on line version. Kocher reported we are giving the students what they want in the way they want it.
(Item V, Subd. C) Wiech indicated Bush wanted to discuss vending machine revenue. Bush said that it is not much revenue. Sellner reported we have more restrictions now due to Federal guidelines.
(Item V, Subd. D) Wiech indicated Bush wanted to discuss extra-curricular participation numbers. Bush asked about the triple A selection because he received a couple of phone calls this week about it. Sellner reported history has been that one person looked at the information and made a selection; however that doesn’t mean that we have to continue doing that.
Bush suggested issuing two free passes to a family of a student who is enrolled in a sport. Sellner indicated we lowered the activity pass fees so if you purchased it ahead of time you would save money. Sellner also reported the conference is asking us to go to three officials next year; so that will be an addition to the budget.
(Item V, Subd. E) Wiech indicated Bush wanted to discuss the bell curve-honor roll. The board discussed the bell curve and honor roll.
(Item V, Subd. F) Wiech indicated Bush wanted to discuss what should students know by age 15 and 18. Bush indicated he would like to see more lyceums. Sellner reported we have speakers come.
(Item V, Subd. G) Wiech indicated Bush wanted to discuss block scheduling. Bush said he heard the district was looking at block scheduling and hoped there is more input from parents and staff. Mix reported this was brought forward from the staff to make things better for students. Mix indicated there is a committee that meets and has been exploring many different options. Sellner indicated we are going to thoroughly explore this and bring information back to the board.
Principal Schimelpfenig gave a report.
(Item V, Subd. H) Wiech indicated Bush wanted to discuss Sunday scheduling. Bush expressed concern over the school having things on Sunday and Wednesday nights. Sellner reported Community Ed has things offered Sunday and Wednesday nights; it is nothing school related. Diers reported things on Sundays typically have parents with kids doing family things together.
