BOARD OF EDUCATION REGULAR MEETING
Monday, May 9, 2016
HLWW HS Media Center
The May 9, 2016 Regular School Board meeting of the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted ISD #2687 was called to order at 6:02 p.m.. by Chairperson Wiech. After the pledge of allegiance, roll was taken with the following members present: Wiech, Heuer, Bush, Diers, Bravinder, Detlefsen and Kocher. Also present were Superintendent Brad Sellner and Board Secretary Marilyn Greeley.
(Item IV) Heuer motioned to approve the agenda; Diers seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item V) There were no questions or comments from visitors.
(Item VI) Diers motioned to approve the consent agenda which included the April 11, 2016 Regular Board meeting minutes, April 25, 2016 Special Board meeting minutes, April 25, 2016 Work Session meeting minutes, May bills, building project bills, enrollment, the family leave request of Jessica Ingram scheduled for August 22, 2016 through October 17, 2016; and Rachel Erger approximately October 28, 2016 through January 3, 2017; the resignation of Kim Looman effective the end of the 2015-16 school year; the following employment recommendations: Hannah Vreeland as a 7/8 grade Language Arts Teacher effective the 2016-17 school year replacing Brooke Thrall; and Rick Baumann as a 5th Grade Teacher effective the 2016-17 school year replacing Kim Looman; the second reading and approval of the following policies: 417-Chemical Use & Abuse; 418-Drug-Free Workplace/Drug-Free School; 419-Tobacco-Free Environment; 420-Students & Employees with Sexually Transmitted Infections & Diseases & Certain Other Communicable Diseases & Infectious Conditions; and 532-Use of Peace Officers & Crisis Teams to Remove Students with IEP’s from School Grounds; Elementary Laker News, Teaching Today MN Spring 2016 Volume 2, and the following recognitions:
The School Board recognizes HLWW Students of Excellence Maggie Miller, Emily Pidde, Kaitlyn Kruzel, and Stephen Montgomery. Students were chosen from among high schools in Central Minnesota and were honored at the annual Students of Excellence Banquet with parents and teachers sponsored by Resource Training and Solutions. Congratulations to these students for achieving this recognition.
The School Board recognizes Madeline Weninger on being named the Minnesota FFA Association 2016 Star in AgriBusiness. Maddie was named to the associations highest honors on Monday April 25, 2016. Congratulations Maddie and best of luck in the future!
The School Board recognizes all the FFA members who attended the Minnesota State FFA Convention. We are proud of your accomplishments, and congratulations to the following who placed: Floriculture team placed 1st-team members are Jeanna Benson, Savanna Weber, Amanda Olson, and Keith Lent; Parliamentary Procedure team placed 1st-team members are Keith Lent, Gabriell Bayerl, Maddie Weninger, Lauren Painschab, Amanda Olson, and Kaitlyn Decker; and Maddie Weninger placed 1st in Job Interview. Great job everyone!
The School Board recognizes Hathaway Heber on being names the CMC Player of the Week. Hathaway is batting 400 with 14 runs, 5 RBI’s and 3 stolen bases. Congratulations Hathaway and keep up the good work.
The School Board recognizes Gracie Mallak for breaking the school record in the 1600m at the CMC Indoor Meet. Her time of 5:29.00 beat the old record of 5:31.40 set by Wendy Hechsel in 1980. Congratulations Gracie and keep up the good work.
The School Board recognizes Harlon Adickes for donating $100 of memorial funds from Donna’s funeral to be added to the Chris Adickes Scholarship fund for HLWW Schools. Thank you for your donation and continued support of our school district.
The School Board recognizes Centra Sota Coop for donating $100 to the trapshooting team. Thank you for your donation and continued support of our school district.
The School Board recognizes Tetra Pak for donating six general admission Winstock Tickets for Teacher Appreciation week. Thank you for your donation in support of Teacher Appreciation week.
Heuer seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. A) Scott Berning, Activities Director, presented the Why We Play Training Video from the State High School League. The board members viewed the video.
(Item VII, Subd. B) Diers motioned to approve the MN State High School League Resolution; Heuer seconded; Wiech read the resolution; those in favor: Kocher, Heuer, Bush, Bravinder, Diers, Detlefsen, and Wiech; opposed: none; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. C) Bravinder motioned to approve the treasurer’s report; Kocher seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. D) Heuer motioned to approve the resolution Relating to Termination and Nonrenewal of Anna Granum, a probationary teacher, contract; Kocher seconded; those in favor: Kocher, Heuer, Bush, Bravinder, Diers, Detlefsen, and Wiech; those opposed: none; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. E) Superintendent Sellner reported the Buildings and Grounds Committee reviewed the two quotes received for the playground equipment. Bravinder motioned to approve the purchasing of playground equipment not to exceed $80,000; Diers seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. F) Superintendent Sellner explained the well project is for irrigation of the additional fields, the FFA garden and drinking water when needed at the fields. Sellner said we are still in the process of obtaining another quote, but would like direction from the board so we can move forward with the project soon.
Kocher motioned to approve the well project up to $51,000; Diers seconded; those in favor: Kocher, Heuer, Diers, Detlefsen and Wiech; opposed: Bush and Bravinder; passed by majority.
(Item VII, Subd. G) Heuer motioned to approve the following items for the May Work Session:
• Discuss School & District Parent Involvement Plans
• Discuss Curriculum Reports-Ag and Gifted/Talented
• Discuss Incentives for Senior Class Students
• Discuss Military Wall
Detlefsen seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. H) The Policy Committee recommends the first reading of the following policy: 530-Immunization Requirements.
(Item VIII, Subd. A) Superintendent Sellner gave a report.
