|BOARD OF EDUCATION REGULAR MEETING
Monday, August 8, 2016

The August 8, 2016 Regular School Board meeting of the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted ISD #2687 was called to order at 6:00 p.m.. by Chairperson Wiech. After the pledge of allegiance, roll was taken with the following members present: Wiech, Lasiuk, Heuer, Bush, Bravinder, Diers and Detlefsen. Also present were Superintendent Brad Sellner, and Board Secretary Marilyn Greeley.
(Item IV) Heuer motioned to approve the agenda; Detlefsen seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item V) There were no questions or comments from visitors.
(Item VI) Bravinder motioned to approve the consent agenda which included the July 11, 2016 regular board meeting minutes, August bills, building project bills, the employment of Kayla Maher as a 2nd grade Teacher at Humphrey Elementary effective the 2016-17 school year-replacing April Kalal; Tanner Krutzig as a Phy Ed Teacher at Winsted Elementary effective the 2016-17 school year-replacing Nicki Schahn; Anna Granum as the ELL/GT teacher effective the 2016-17 school year; and Nathan Decker as a Middle School Special Ed Teacher effective the 2016-17 school year-replacing Diana Jobin-Vig, communications documents Board and Administrator for School Board and for Superintendents, and the following recognitions:
The School Board recognizes all staff and students who represented HLWW Schools Laker Pride in the local parades this summer. Thank you for your participation and support of the school district.
The School Board recognizes HLWW students recently crowned in local city celebrations: Miss Howard Lake Kaitlyn Marschel, and Courtney Uecker as princess during Good Neighbor Days coronation. Congratulations to both of you, and good luck in the future.
The School Board recognizes Jenna Koosman who was recently crowned as a Wright County Ambassador and Miss Congeniality during the Wright County Fair coronation. Congratulations Jenna, and good luck in the future.
The School Board recognizes Kassandra Scherping who was recently crowned as a Minneapolis Aquatennial Princess. Congratulations Kassandra, and good luck in the future.
Diers seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. A) Ryan O’Connor and Steve Nisbet from Wright Hennepin Electric reviewed the solar project.
Heuer motioned to approve the Wright Hennepin solar project upon approval from the attorney; Diers seconded; Bush indicated the board should wait. Wiech indicated the project would show we are looking at ways to conserve energy. Sellner indicated this is a way to have a solar project on a smaller scale. Wiech indicated there was a motion and a second; Bush was opposed; motion passed by majority.
(Item VII, Subd. B) Margaret Marketon, Community Ed Director, give an update on the fitness center.
(Item VII, Subd. C) Heuer motioned to approve the treasurer’s report; Lasiuk seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. D) Detlefsen motioned to approve the Food Service Director, cashier, cooks, and part-time workers contract; Bravinder seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. E) Heuer motioned to adopt the resolution calling for a school board election; Detlefsen seconded; Wiech read the resolution; those in favor: Detlefsen, Diers, Bravinder, Bush, Heuer, Lasiuk, and Wiech; opposed: none; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. F) The board members discussed who can attend the upcoming open houses.
Wiech indicated there is a mediation meeting with the Bus Drivers on August 22nd, is anyone opposed to moving our work session to August 29th? No one was opposed to move the work session to August 29th.
(Item VII, Subd. G) Heuer motioned to approve the following items for the August 29th Work Session:
View STEP Program Video, and update on MAWSECO programs
Discuss After Prom Committee
Discuss Activity Fees for Free and Reduced Students
Discuss Superintendent Goals
Detlefsen seconded; Bush indicated he would like to discuss the cost out of pocket for parents, for items such as school supplies, lunch, clothes, and insurance for computers, pictures, and ticket fees. Wiech and Lasiuk both indicated it would be difficult to determine the cost for clothes because each family shops differently. Wiech indicated we have already reviewed school supply lists and activity fees. Motion passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. H) The Policy Committee recommends the first reading of the following policies: 410-Family & Medical Leave; 413-Harassment & Violence; 414-Mandated Reporting of Child Neglect or Physical or Sexual Abuse; 415-Mandated Reporting of Maltreatment of Vulnerable Adults; 506-Student Discipline; 514-Bullying Prohibition; 522- Student Sex Nondiscrimination; 524-Internet Acceptable Use & Safety; 616-School District System Accountability; and 806-Crisis Management.
(Item VIII, Subd. A) Superintendent Sellner gave a report.
(Item VIII, Subd. B) Wiech indicated the School Board Committee Reports are attached for you to review.
