BOARD OF EDUCATION REGULAR MEETING
Monday, May 8, 2017

The May 8, 2017 Regular School Board meeting of the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted ISD #2687 was called to order at 6:01 p.m. by Chairperson Wiech. After the pledge of allegiance, roll was taken with the following members present: Wiech, Lasiuk, Heuer, Bravinder, Diers and Detlefsen; absent: Bush. Also present were Superintendent Brad Sellner and Board Secretary Marilyn Greeley.
(Item IV) Heuer motioned to approve the agenda; Diers seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item V) There were no questions or comments from visitors.
(Item VI) Wiech indicated there is an additional hire, Ryan Petersen-Elementary Physical Education teacher at Winsted Elementary for the consent agenda.
Heuer motioned to approve the consent agenda which included the April 10, 2017 Regular Board Meeting minutes, the April 24, 2017 Work Session Meeting minutes, May bills, Buildings Project Bills, enrollment, the medical leave for Sheri Arneson for the remainder of the 2016-17 school year; and the resignations of Mary Kay Stanek as a Humphrey Elementary Para effective the end of the 2016-17 school year; and Ed Kutz as Head Girls Basketball Coach effective the end of the 2016-17 season, approving the following employment recommendations: Kevin Lamont as High School/Middle School Ag Teacher effective the 2017-18 school year replacing Kevin Scott; Jennifer Robinson as a Para at Humphrey Elementary effective May 1, 2017 replacing Lori Murphy; and Molly Edwards as High School Counselor effective the 2017-18 school year replacing Terri Collins, and Ryan Petersen as Elementary Physical Education teacher at Winsted Elementary replacing Tanner Krutzig, second reading and approval of the following policies: 527-Student Use & Parking of Motor Vehicles; 606-Textbooks & Instructional Materials; 607-Organization of Grade Levels; 610-Field Trips, the following communications: Elementary Laker News, Article from Dwayne Diers, Articles from Charlie Bush, and Teaching Today Spring 2017 Volume 2, and the following recognitions:
The School Board recognizes Tetra Pak for donating ten general admission Winstock Tickets for Teacher Appreciation week. Thank you for your donation in support of Teacher Appreciation week.
The School Board recognizes HLWW Students of Excellence Hannah Paulson, Maddie Weninger, Keith Lent and Amanda Olson. Students were chosen from among high schools in Central Minnesota and were honored at the annual Students of Excellence Banquet with parents and teachers sponsored by Resource Training and Solutions. Congratulations to these students for achieving this recognition.
The School Board recognizes Madeline Weninger on being named the State FFA Sentinel. Congratulations Maddie and best of luck in the future!
The School Board recognizes all the FFA members who attended the Minnesota State FFA Convention. We are proud of your accomplishments, and congratulations on being State Chapter Award winners. The School Board recognizes 4.0 School Services for donating $2,000 to the District for logos on chairs being used for sports teams in the gymnasium. Thank you for your donation and continued support of the District.
Diers seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. A) Scott Berning, Activities Director, played the video “Why we Play” from the State High School League and reviewed the information.
(Item VII, Subd. B) Scott Berning, Activities Director, recommends approval of the MSHSL resolution. Wiech read the resolution; those in favor: Lasiuk, Heuer, Bravinder, Diers, Detlefsen and Wiech, opposed: none; absent: Bush; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. C) Diers motioned to approve the treasurer’s report; Bravinder seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. D) Heuer motioned to approve the agreement with Hildi Inc. for the actuarial study; Detlefsen seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. E) Heuer motioned to approve the estimates with Agropur-escalating pricing, Bimbo Bakeries (Earthgrains), Mumford Sanitation and Mid-County Coop; Detlefsen seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. F) Heuer motioned to approve the 2017-18 preliminary budget; Diers seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. G) The Policy Committee recommends the first reading of the following policies: 709-Student Transportation Safety Policy, 710-Extracurricular Transportation, 907-Rewards, 421-Gifts to Employees, 422-Policies Incorporated by Reference, 423-Employee-Student Relationships, 424-License Status, and 534-Food Service Policy/Procedures.
(Item VII, Subd. H) Discuss and approve work session agenda items.

• Discuss Math Curriculum Reports
Lasiuk indicated she would like the new high school counselor to give a report on what their responsibilities will be.
Sellner reviewed the list of ideas Mr. Bush dropped off for future work sessions.
Bravinder requested making a list of who we have had at lyceums.
Heuer asked how many students participated in the unplugged program at the high school.
Bravinder would like a one page biography of the new hires.
Heuer requested if the principals could indicate why they are hiring a particular person.
Sellner indicated he would let the principals know of their suggestions at the admin meeting.
Heuer motioned to approve the above items for the May Work Session; Detlefsen seconded; passed unanimously.
