WORK SESSION MEETING
Monday, August 28, 2017
HLWW HS Media Center
The August 28, 2017 School Board Work Session meeting of the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted ISD #2687 was called to order at 6:00 p.m. by Chairperson Wiech. After the pledge of allegiance, roll was taken with the following members present: Wiech, Heuer, Bush, Bravinder, Diers; absent: Lasiuk; Detlefsen arrived at 6:05 p.m. Also present were Superintendent Brad Sellner, Principals Jason Mix, Jim Schimelpfenig, and Board Secretary Marilyn Greeley.
(Item IV) Diers motioned to approve the agenda; Heuer seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item V) Diers motioned to approve the consent agenda which included the resignations of Kathy Welman as an Elementary Para effective immediately; and Kelly Frank as an Elementary Para effective immediately and the following employment recommendations: Michelle LaBeau as a High School Paraprofessional effective the 2017-18 school year, replacing Eldora Miller; Christopher Cousin as a High School Business Teacher effective the 2017-18 school year, replacing Darrell Smith; Sara Mortensen as a SAC Paraprofessional replacing Clare Bjork; Clare Bjork as a SAC Supervisor replacing an open position; Chelsea Wandresee as a Fourth Grade Teacher effective the 2017-18 school year, replacing Lisa Jennissen; Janai Kittock as an Elementary Para effective the 2017-18 school year; Heuer seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VI, Subd. A) Emily Holm, High School Counselor, introduced herself, gave her background and also gave her perspective goals on the high school counseling position.
Principal Mix reported Holm has done a good job so far and has a calming personality.
(Item VI, Subd. B) Wiech reported the Post-Secondary Education article was a request from Mr. Bush. Bush indicated the Post-Secondary Education article talks about other opportunities out there other than a four year degree; businesses are looking for help. Heuer indicated that we have discussed this before and the district does have a program in place for students to review their options after graduation.
(Item VI, Subd. C) Wiech reported the Classroom Supply article was a request from Mr. Bush. Bush asked if it would be possible to have $200 per classroom for teacher to access if they see a student in need. Principal Schimelpfenig reported teachers have a supply budget they can access to purchase supplies, and we also have local organizations and community members who donate classroom supplies for those in need.
(Item VI, Subd. D) Wiech reported the Devices Used To Cheat In School article was a request from Mr. Bush. Bush asked if members read the article. Heuer indicated it was interesting because only the first two paragraphs talks about cheating and the rest of the article was about cyber bullying. Heuer also indicated she went to the web site of the article which actually talked about using technology for good uses.
(Item VII, Subd. A) Superintendent Sellner indicated Principal Olson will send a written report because she is at Kindergarten open house.
Principal Schimelpfenig gave a report.

(Item VII, Subd. D) Heuer indicated she received an e-mail and mail from IPS Solar regarding a solar garden. Superintendent Sellner said there are many solar gardens going up in the area and he would look into the solar garden information.

• Work Session Meeting - Monday September 25, 2017 6 p.m. HLWW HS Media Center Heuer indicated she will not be able to attend the September work session.

(Item X) Heuer motioned to close the meeting at 7:20 pm; Diers seconded; passed unanimously.
Superintendent Sellner presented his goals.
Heuer motioned to close the closed meeting at 7:59 p.m.; Detlefsen seconded; motion passed unanimously.
Detlefsen motioned to open the regular meeting at 7:59 p.m.; Bravinder seconded; passed unanimously.
Superintendent Sellner reported he forgot to mention in his report the administration is reading the book called The Five Languages of Appreciation in the Work Place.
Detlefsen motioned to adjourn at 8:01 p.m.; Bravinder seconded; passed unanimously.
