BOARD OF EDUCATION REGULAR MEETING
Monday, October 9, 2017
HLWW HS Media Center
The October 9, 2017 Regular School Board meeting of the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted ISD #2687 was called to order at 6:01 p.m.. by Chairperson Wiech. After the pledge of allegiance, roll was taken with the following members present: Wiech, Lasiuk, Heuer, Bush, Bravinder, Diers and Detlefsen. Also present were Superintendent Brad Sellner, Principal Jason Mix and Board Secretary Marilyn Greeley.
(Item IV) Heuer motioned to approve the agenda; Diers seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item V) Wyatt Determan, HLWW student, read a poem.
(Item VI) Wiech reported Joanie Lasiuk and Rick Smith have an additional recognition to present to the board and Superintendent Sellner also indicated he had a recognition to present.
Rick Smith, KLKR Advisor, reviewed the donation of a projector donated by Chris Bennett of Creative Technology Group from Chicago, and thanked them for their generous donation to the district. Superintendent Sellner also thanked Billy Hucker for donating five picnic tables and two benches from his Eagle Scout project to the district. Diers also recognized Melanie Lawrence as being na.m.ed Teacher of the Year.
Heuer motioned to approve the consent agenda with the additional recognition of Chris Bennett from Creative Technology Group for donating a projector to the district, and the September 11, 2017 Regular Board Meeting minutes, September 25, 2017 Work Session Meeting minutes, October bills, Building Project bills, September enrollment, the resignation of Michael Hincher as a custodian effective September 21, 2017, and the following lane changes: Emily Konerza from BA10 to BA20; Jay Krzmarzick from MA20 to MA40; Regina Magedanz from MA to MA10; Jodi Sanken from BA10 to BA20; Alexandra Thrasher from BA20 to MA; and Leann Gallagher from BA10 to BA20, the second reading of policy 533-Wellness, the following communications: Resource Training & Solutions Communicator, Teaching Today-Back to School 2017, and Elementary Laker News, and the following recognitions:
The School Board recognizes the following support staff honored recently at the 7th annual Educational Support Staff recognition event: Linda Tassinari, Ada.m. Koeppe, Cindy Decker and Denny Decker. This event sponsored by Resource Training and Solutions, honors educational support staff who are an integral part of our school district. We congratulate you on this accomplishment and thank you for your commitment to students of this district.
The School Board recognizes Lissa Gatz for her donation of $1590.59 to the sports and fine arts progra.m.s of the district and $954.35 donation to the Winsted Elementary library, phy ed and music progra.m.s. Thank you Lissa for your donation and support of the district.
The School Board recognizes Melanie Lawrence, Middle School Physical Education and Health Teacher, who has been chosen to receive the Minnesota Society of Health and Physical Educators’ (MN SHAPE) Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year Award! As the Minnesota Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year, Melanie will be eligible to be considered for the Central District and then the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE A.m.erica) National Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year! Melanie will be honored at an award ceremony, which will take place during the MN SHAPE State Conference on November 9th in Plymouth. Congratulations Mrs. Lawrence! We are so very proud of you!
The School Board recognizes the following teachers who will be honored at the 26th annual Leadership in Educational Excellence (LEEA) banquet on October 25, 2017: Vawn Krzmarzick, Kristi Main and Tony Kley. This annual event sponsored by Resource Training and Solutions, honors educators for their dedication to teaching and inspiring students. We congratulate you on this accomplishment, and thank you for your commitment to students of this district.
The School Board recognizes Super Target in Minnetonka and Lynn Baumann for donating 25 cases of notebooks to the district. Thank you Lynn and Target for your generous donation.
The School Board recognizes MEADA for their donation of $500 to support the Humphrey and Winsted Elementary Laker Proud Mentor Groups. Thank you for your continuous support to our district and students.
The School Board recognizes B&B Tire of Winsted and Howard Lake Presbyterian Church for their efforts to start students out prepped and prepared, with their donation of school supplies to the elementary buildings. Thank you for your generosity and support of the school district.
The School Board recognizes the volunteers assisting with the vision and hearing screening at the elementary buildings. Thank you for your continued volunteer support of the school district.
The School Board recognizes Lori Huotari for her donation of school supplies for both students and staff. Thank you for your continued support of the students and district.
The School Board recognizes Humphrey and Winsted Elementary PIE groups for providing delicious goodies for Elementary staff in September. Thank you for your continued support of the school district.
The School Board recognizes the Wright County Sheriff’s office, Howard Lake and Winsted Police Departments, Glenn’s Super Value and Waverly City Hall with their assistance with our Walk to School event on October 4, 2017. Thanks for supporting a safe route to school and being involved!
The School Board recognizes Billy Hucker, HLWW High School student for completing his Eagle Scout project by building picnic tables for the HS/MS outdoor classroom. Thank you for this wonderful addition to our ca.m.pus and congratulations to you on the completion of your Eagle Scout project!

Diers seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. A) School Resource Officer Szczepanik gave an update on his position with district.
(Item VII, Subd. B) Heuer motioned to approve the treasurer’s report; Diers seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. C) Diers motioned to approve policies 620-Credit For Learning with the change for weighted grades; and 903-Visitors to School District Buildings & Sites; Detlefsen seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. D) Diers motioned to approve changing the na.m.e of the National Honor Society to the Minnesota Honor Society; Heuer seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. E) Diers motioned to approve the enrollment study quote from School Finance with a presentation to the board; Heuer seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. F) Heuer motioned to approve the cement for the dugouts at the middle/high school facility for $19,864 with Ken Spaeth Masonry; Diers seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. G) Heuer motioned to approve the QComp MOU; Diers seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. H) Superintendent Sellner recommended waiting until the audit is presented and approved at the November meeting before approving any additional staff. Sellner indicated the FFA advisors Jim Weninger and Seena Glessing are requesting an assistant FFA position. Sellner reported they currently have one assistant and they are looking to expand into the middle school.
(Item VII, Subd. I) Superintendent Sellner recommended waiting until the audit is presented and approved at the November meeting before approving any additional staff. Sellner indicated KLKR advisor Rick Smith is requesting an assistant KLKR position.
(Item VII, Subd. J) Superintendent Sellner recommended waiting until the audit is presented and approved at the November meeting before approving any additional staff. Sellner indicated Linda Wharra.m., Special Ed Coordinator, and Principal Mix, Schimelpfenig and Olson are requesting an additional .5 LD Teacher at Humphrey Elementary, .5 Para at Winsted Elementary and a 5.5 Para at the Middle/High School with a preference for the middle school. Sellner reported our special education numbers are going up however we have not added any additional para staff; however there is a growing need.
(Item VII, Subd. K) Superintendent Sellner reported the teacher seniority list is under review and will be brought to the November meeting for approval.
(Item VII, Subd. L) The Policy Committee recommends the first reading of the following policies: 707-Transportation of Public School Students; 708-Transportation of Nonpublic School Students; 711-Videotaping on School Buses; 413-Harassment & Violence; and 522-Student Sex Nondiscrimination
(Item VII, Subd. M) Wiech reported the following are agenda items for the October work session:
• Brian Koslofsky, Wright Tech Center Director will introduce himself
• Joe Tulkki, Transportation Coordinator from 4.O, will review staff and student training
• Mark Lee, Wright Tech Center will review the apprenticeship progra.m..
Heuer motioned to approve the items for the October Work Session; Diers seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VIII, Subd. A) Superintendent Sellner gave a report.
(Item VIII, Subd. B) Wiech indicated the school board committee reports are attached.
Diers congratulated Superintendent Sellner on his reelection to the SWETC Coop.
