BOARD OF EDUCATIONREGULAR MEETING

The April 9, 2018 Regular School Board meeting of the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted ISD #2687 was called to order at 6:00 p.m.. by Chairperson Wiech. After the pledge of allegiance, roll was taken with the following members present: Wiech, Lasiuk, Heuer, Diers and Detlefsen; absent: Bush; Bravinder arriving later (arrived at 6:06 p.m.). Also present were Superintendent Brad Sellner and Board Secretary Marilyn Greeley.
(Item IV) Heuer motioned to approve the agenda; Diers seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item V) There were no questions or comments from visitors.
(Item VI) Superintendent Sellner reported the new hires for the 2018-19 school year are included in the consent agenda, and there is one other person we will approve for hire later in the agenda as well.
Diers motioned to approve the consent agenda which included the March 12, 2018 Regular Board Meeting minutes, April Bills, March Enrollment, childcare leave for Heather Eastling beginning August 27, 2018 thru November 2, 2018; FMLA leave request for A.m.y Ohlemacher-Lonetti effective March 1, 2018 through the remainder of the 2017-18 school year; extended leave for Carolyn Stoll through April 16, 2018; the retirement of Kevin Scott as Head Gymnastics Coach effective immediately; and the resignation of Regina Magedanz as a Middle School Special Ed Teacher effective the end of the 2017-18 school year, the employment of Jackie Hartneck as a Middle School Special Education Teacher beginning the 2018-19 school year replacing Nathan Decker; Richard Larson as High School/Middle School Ag/Tech Ed teacher beginning the 2018-19 school year replacing Kevin Lamont; Teresa Larson as the High School/Middle School Business teacher beginning the 2018-19 school year replacing Chris Cousin, and the following lane changes: Leann Gallagher from BA20 to BA30; Jeff Goudy from MA to MA10; and Emily Konerza from BA20 to BA30, Elementary Laker News, Teaching Today MN Spring 2018 Volume 1, My Favorite Book, and the following recognitions:
The School Board recognizes the FFA Agriculture Communications team who placed 1st in the state and will have the opportunity to represent Minnesota at the National FFA Convention! Individually, Kylee placed 1st, Savanna 2nd, Jenna 4th, and Brooke 6th. Congratulations ladies! Go Lakers!
The School Board recognizes John Zander who received the CMC Distinguished Service Award. Thank you John for all you do for Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted Public Schools!!!
Detlefsen seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. A) Diers motioned to approve the treasurer report; Heuer seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. B) Diers motioned to approve the resolution relating to termination and nonrenewal of a probationary teaching contract for Joe Brennan; Detlefsen seconded; those in favor: Detlefsen, Diers, Bravinder, Heuer, Lasiuk and Wiech; those opposed: none; absent: Bush; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. C) Diers motioned to approve the employment of Samuel Muller as a Middle School Science Teacher for the 2018-19 school year replacing Joe Brennan; Bravinder seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. D) Superintendent Sellner reported we have reviewed the requirements for the amount of instructional hours required for students. Sellner reported we are higher than the minimum number of instructional hours required thus the administration recommends the district does not have students make up the snow days for the 2017-18 school year and allows the administration to work with the staff to make up the days using it as staff development time by June 30th.
Diers motioned to approve not making the snow days up for students and giving administration the opportunity to plan with staff on making up the time by June 30th ; Heuer seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. E) The Policy Committee recommends reviewing the records retention schedule.
(Item VII, Subd. F) Wiech reported the following are agenda items for the April work session:
• Discuss Kindergarten Assessment/Welcome Days for 2018-19 School Year-Principal Olson and staff will present information.
• Discuss Military Wall- Sellner reported Principal Mix is working on this however the company he has been working with is slow to respond and so we are going with another company.
• Discuss Parents paying for tickets for athletic events.
Superintendent Sellner reported he and Principal Mix will be at the FFA State Convention so they will not be able to attend the April Work Session. However Sellner said Principal Olson will be here to present the information about the kindergarten assessment and welcome day and Activities Director, Scott Berning will be here regarding the activity tickets discussion item.
Bravinder motioned to approve the items for the April Work Session; Detlefsen seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VIII, Subd. A) Wiech reported the School Board Committee Reports are attached to review.
