The February 11, 2019 Regular School Board meeting of the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted ISD #2687 was called to order at 6:01pm. by Chairperson Heuer. After the pledge of allegiance, roll was taken with the following members present: Heuer, Koch, Bravinder, Peterson, Scheuch, Diers and Detlefsen. Also present were Superintendent Brad Sellner, Principals Jason Mix, Jim Schimelpfenig, and Jennifer Olson, and Board Secretary Marilyn Greeley.
(Item IV) Diers motioned to approve the agenda; Detlefsen seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item V) There were no questions or comments from visitors.
(Item VI) Diers motioned to approve the consent agenda with included the January 14, 2019 Regular Board Meeting minutes, January 28, 2019 Work Session Meeting minutes, February bills, January enrollment, the leave request from Joe Puncochar from May 10-17, 2019; a leave request from Alexandra Thrasher from approximately May 20, 2019 thru October 7, 2019; and the retirement of Duane Lichy as the District Technology Director, effective the end of the 2018-19 school year, Elementary Laker News, and the following recognitions:
The School Board recognizes Alexa Schumann, Girls Basketball Forward, on being named CMC Player of the Week. In three games Alexa recorded 54 points, had 28 rebounds, 5 steals and 2 blocked shots. She also recorded a season high 27 points in a victory. Great job Alexa!
The School Board recognizes Quinn Mathisen on being named CMC Player of the Week. Quinn is a Junior, wrestling in the 285 lb class. A first year wrestler, he upset the #2 and #3 seeds on his way to a 2nd place finish at the TCU Invite. Quinn went 5-2 during the week with a match clinching pin. Way to go Quinn!
The School Board recognizes our Food Science team on placing 1st at the regional competition in Upsala. They now advance to state March 21st! Way to go!
The School Board recognizes an anonymous donation of $1265.67 given to sports and fine arts programs of the district. Thank you for your generous donation and support of the school district.
The School Board recognizes HLWW Girls Basketball player CJ Decker for reaching the 1,000 point mark. Congratulations CJ, keep up the good work!
Sellner reported we may see golf bills that seem high, however they are not any higher than they normally are. Sellner also reported we will be paying the majority of the items and then bill Maple Lake Schools for half the costs.
Scheuch seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. A) Diers motioned to approve the treasurer’s report; Scheuch seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. B) Diers proposed a motion to approve the elementary fall welcome day proposal with childcare during the time of assessment. Koch asked if the childcare is only for school children. Sellner responded it would be for school age care. Olson responded she thought it was for the time the parent needed. Sellner indicated he was looking for the childcare for while the student was there. Olson said at a minimum we would look to cover the time the siblings are there, and if we are looking at a broader time of all day, we would need to have more discussions with Community Ed Director Margaret Marketon.
Diers motioned to approve the welcome day proposal for grades K-4 2019; Scheuch seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. C) Diers motioned to approve the American Indian Parent Advisory Committee; Detlefsen seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. D) Superintendent Sellner reviewed information about districts operating levy renewals.
(Item VII, Subd. E) The Policy Committee recommends the first reading of the following policy: 902-Use of School District Facilities & Equipment, 701-Establishment and Adoption of School District Budget, 701.1-Modification of School District Budget, 702-Accounting, 703-Annual Audit, 705-Investments, 706-Acceptance of Gifts, 712-Video Surveillance Other Than on Buses, 713-Student Activity Accounting, 720-Vending Machines.
(Item VII, Subd. F) The consensus of the board was there are no items to discuss at the work session.
(Item VIII, Subd. A) Superintendent gave a report.
(Item VIII, Subd. B) Principal Olson gave a report.
Principal Schimelpfenig gave a report.
Principal Mix gave a report.
(Item VIII, Subd. C) Heuer indicated the School Board Committee reports are attached to review.
