The May 13, 2019 Regular School Board meeting of the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted ISD #2687 was called to order at 6:02 p.m. by Chairperson Heuer. After the pledge of allegiance, roll was taken with the following members present: Heuer, Koch, Bravinder, Peterson, Scheuch, Diers and Detlefsen. Also present were Superintendent Brad Sellner, Principals Jason Mix, Jim Schimelpfenig, and Jennifer Olson, and Board Secretary Marilyn Greeley.
(Item IV) Superintendent Sellner reported there is an additional agenda item of the PE Position, and an additional resignation of Kathleen Messer as the Middle School Secretary.
Scheuch motioned to approve the agenda; Koch seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item V) There were no questions or comments from visitors.
(Item VI) Heuer reported there is an additional resignation of Kathleen Messer as the Middle School Secretary under item D.
Bravinder motioned to approve the consent agenda which included the April 8, 2019 meeting minutes, May bills, April enrollment, the parental leave request for Jamie Nendza a middle school teacher effective August 26, 2019 thru October 16, 2019; a FMLA leave request for George Montgomery a high school teacher effective May 20, 2019 thru the end of the school year; and the following resignations: Richard Larson as Industrial Technology/Ag Teacher effective the end of the 2018-19 school year; Terri Larson as a High School Business Education/Technology teacher effective the end of the 2018-19 school year; Tanner Krutzig as a High School PE/Health teacher effective the end of the 2018-19 school year, and Kathleen Messer as Middle School Secretary effective June 30, 2019, the employment of Tyler Maher as a Social Studies Teacher at the Middle School effective the 2019-20 school year-replacing Travis Eldred-who is transferring to a District Wide Technology position; Hannah Porter-Gilman as a Band Teacher at the Middle School effective the 2019-20 school year-replacing Nathan Mitchell; Shannon Durick as a Speech Teacher effective the 2019-20 school year-replacing Jill Hannay; Janie Dalbec as a SLD Special Education Teacher effective the 2019-20 school year-new Special Education position previously approved; Lisa Stenzel as a Special Education Teacher at the Middle School effective the 2019-20 school year-replacing Hannah Klug-who is transferring to the High School; Jeremiah Jones as a PE/Health teacher at the high school effective the 2019-20 school year replacing Tanner Krutzig; Kortney Hedlund as an Elementary Teacher at Winsted Elementary effective the 2019-20 school year replacing Sue Neumann; and Amanda Zimmerman as a Kindergarten Teacher at Winsted Elementary effective the 2019-20 school year replacing Jess Stifter, the second reading and approval of the following policies: 501-School Weapons, 502-Search of Student Lockers, Desks, Personal Possessions, and Student’s Person, 515-Protection and Privacy of Pupil Records, 521-Student Disability Nondiscrimination, 526-Hazing Prohibition, 530-Immunization Requirements, 531-The Pledge of Allegiance, the Elementary Laker News, Teaching Today Spring 2019 Volume 2, Thank You from Jenny Moe’s family, and the following recognitions:
The School Board recognizes HLWW Students of Excellence Logan Iverson, Kealy Karels, Thomas Kittock and Lauren Munn. Students were chosen from among high schools in Central Minnesota and were honored at the annual Students of Excellence Banquet with parents and teachers, sponsored by Resource Training and Solutions. Congratulations to these students for achieving this recognition.
The School Board recognizes the following FFA teams who had top place finishes at the 2019 MN State FFA Convention on April 28-30. Floriculture Team-1st in State, Marketing Team-2nd in State, Nursery Team-1st in State, Soils Team-4th in State, Greenhand#1-1st in State, Greenhand #2-4th in State and Ag Communications Team-1st in State. All first place state winners will attend the National FFA Convention in October. Congratulations to all the advisors, teams and members, great job on representing HLWW Schools!
Detlefsen seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. A) Principal Jason Mix and HLWW Scholarship Foundation representative Lissa Gatz discussed the recent Youth Frontiers respect retreat on April 24, 2019. Mix also indicated they will also be coming here for a kindness retreat on May 29th for the fourth grade students.
(Item VII, Subd. B) Detlefsen motioned to approve the treasurer’s report; Peterson seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. C) Superintendent Sellner reviewed the information about E Learning Days. Sellner recommended the district keep researching this option but as of now the administration does not recommend using E Learning days in part due to the lack of technology we have available to our students.
(Item VII, Subd. D) Superintendent Sellner reviewed the updated changes for the 2019-2020 school calendar which included adding a snow day, end of the quarter and semester dates and modifying the parent teacher conference dates and times; with the only other possible change to be a possible graduation date change.
Koch motioned to approve the revised 2019-2020 school calendar; Peterson seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. E) Detlefsen motioned to approve the resolution discontinuing and reducing educational programs and positions; Koch seconded; Bravinder asked Principal Olson if this still covers her. Olson said yes. those in favor: Peterson, Bravinder, Koch, Detlefsen, Diers, Scheuch and Heuer; those opposed: none; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. F) Superintendent Sellner reviewed the Operating Levy renewal information. Heuer asked for board members to contact the committee members with any comments or information.
(Item VII, Subd. G) Curriculum Director/High School Principal Jason Mix reviewed the literacy curriculum report and asked for its approval. Mix reported there is a group of eight committee members.
Bravinder motioned to approve the Literacy Curriculum Report; Koch seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. H) Detlefsen motioned to approve the resolution accepting donations; Scheuch seconded; those in favor: Detlefsen, Diers, Scheuch, Peterson, Bravinder, Koch and Heuer; those opposed: none; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. I) Bravinder motioned to approve the overnight student trip for the Spanish Club to the Dominican Republic overnight student trip June 17-June 25, 2020; Peterson seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. J) Superintendent Sellner reviewed the information for the additional Phy Ed position. Sellner reported the administration is asking for approval for an additional Phy Ed position.
Koch motioned to approve the additional Phy Ed position; Detlefsen seconded; passed unanimously.
(Item VII, Subd. K) The Policy Committee recommends the first reading of the following policy: 101-Legal Status of the School District, 101.1-Name of School District, 102-Equal Educational Opportunity, 103-Complaints-Students, Employees, Parents, Other Persons, 104-School District Mission Statement, 207-Public Hearings, 208-Development, Adoptions, and Implementation of Policies, 212-School Board Member Development, 214-Out of State Travel by School Board Members, 306-Administrator Code of Ethics, 612.1-Development of Parental Involvement Policies for Title I Programs and 516-Student Medication
(Item VII, Subd. L) Heuer asked if there are any items for the work session, hearing non we will not have a work session this month. Heuer indicated the Levy Committee may meet in place of the work session.
(Item VIII, Subd. A) Superintendent Sellner gave a report.
(Item VIII, Subd. B) Principal Olson gave a report.
Principal Schimelpfenig gave a report.
Principal Mix gave a report.
(Item VIII, Subd. C) Heuer reported the school board committee reports are attached to review.
