Lester Prairie School Board Minutes

Tuesday, March 1, 2005

A special meeting of the Board of Education of District #424, Lester Prairie, McLeod County, Minnesota was held on Tuesday, March 1, 2005 in the school media center. Chairman Fred Blaser called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. Members present were Chairman Fred Blaser, Vice-Chairman Chester Hoememann, Treasurer Robert Remer, Clerk Jeff Hecksel and Director Melissa Williams. Director Robert Carlson was absent. Administration present included Superintendent Joe Miller, Principal Pam Lukens, and Assistant Principal/A.D. Ron Erpenbach. Ryan Gueningsman of the Herald Journal was also present.

Members of the public present included the following: Doug Jilek, Sheila Jilek, Dee Zubrod, Christy Maesse, Glenn Maesse, Amy Meyer, Carol Klaustermeier, Kim DeBruyckere, Maurice Dammann, Christine Dammann, Paula Walter, Shelly Kloos, Mike Raguse, Dawn Raguse, Carol Wortz, Barb Kegler, Julie Lange, Vicki Roufs, Marette Millerbernd, Bonnie Gebhardt, Deb Lohse, Jason Blashack, Tina Blashack, Diane Remer, Kristi Alberts, Rick Alberts, Fred Holasek, Don Schnaser, Mary Scbnaser, Barry Kyllo, MerriLea Kyllo, Cindy Lou Latzke, Donald Albrecht, Jane Otto, Arleen Holmbeck, Steve Ziermann, Kim Ziermann, Jennifer Thiry, Cathy Houg, Jill Fiecke, Anne Kiekhaefer, Kathy Kiekhaefer, Rollie Radtke, Nancy Krull, Gregg Machemebl, Kelli Machemehl, Jenni Sebora, Karla Heigl, Cathy Scoblic, Joe Scoblic, Kelly Kramer, Pat Miller, Eric Angvall, Cathy Nelson-Messer, Lisa Baumann, Rick Baumann and Gary Paul.

Vice-Chairman Chester Hoernemann led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Mr. Miller gave the board members a certificate of appreciation from the MSBA.

Mr. Miller and Chester Hoernemann attended the MSBA rally for education. They gave us their overall thoughts on the rally. While there, they were able to speak with Senator Dille.

Mr. Miller gave the board a summary of the district financial status. Over $300,000 in cuts need to be made. The current student population is approximately 445. Mr. Miller also stated that a number of years ago, then Superintendent Busch started the Lester Prairie School Foundation. Mr. Miller is making plans to reactivate/reorganize the foundation. Anyone wishing to contribute to the fund may do so. Currently there is around $1,000 in the fund.

At 6:08 p.m. Chairman Blaser gave the public time to voice their opinions on the district’s financial situation. A variety of ideas were given such as keeping elementary classes small, bringing back the foreign exchange program and numerous other suggestions. It was mentioned that recent newspaper articles are making the financial situation seem much worse than it actually is. “No the ship isn’t sinking, and the sky isn’t falling!” Mr. Miller assured us that we will have school here next year, and for many years to come.

Chairman Blaser adjourned the special meeting at 7:34 p.m.
