Eldor T. Mathews
Funeral services for Eldor T. Mathews, 75, of rural Glencoe
will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday July 29, at the First Evangelical Lutheran
Church in Glencoe. The Rev. Harvey Kath will officiate.
Mr. Mathews died at the Burns Manor Nursing Home on Friday,
July 24, 1998.
The organist will be William Niebuhr, and the soloist will
be Mary Kay Schuft. Music selections include the solo “Amazing Grace”
and congregational hymns “What A Friend We Have In Jesus” and
“How Great Thou Art.”
The pallbearers will be the grandchildren: Dan Kellar,
Bob Villnow, Sheldon Mathews, Shelley Rhode, Kari Sons, Brenda Meyer, Tammy
Pikal, Tera Messner, Britany Schmerbauch, Grant Henkelmann, Kim Henkelmann,
Dustin Henkelmann, Nicholas Mathews, Danielle Mathews, Stacie Muchow, Chad
Muchow, Jamie Mathews Schmidt and Dakota Mathews Schmidt. The honorary casket
bearers are the great grandchildren.
Eldor Theodore Mathews was born to Rheinold and Pauline
(Tone) Mathews on Oct. 26, 1922 in Glencoe. He was baptized Nov. 26, 1922
at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glencoe by the Rev. Kolbe. He
was confirmed March 21, 1937 at the First Ev. Lutheran Church by the Rev.
Streufert. He attended the First Lutheran Parochial School through the eighth
grade.
On December 26, 1943 he was united in marriage with Mertle
Pinske at First Lutheran by the Rev. Streubert. He made a living farming
and had his own well drilling, plumbing, and heating business in the earlier
1950s.
During his career he attended several conventions in the
Twin Cities related to his business. In 1965, he earned the Farmer Of The
Year award, and in 1972 he was presented with a Conservation Award from
the McLeod County Conservation District.
Mr. Mathews cared for his family, always showing interest
in his eight children’s lives. As a Grandpa, he had a big heart for all
of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved fishing, visiting
with friends, going to auctions, driving the Bobcat and golf cart, as well
as helping on other family farms after retiring. He loved the family dog
“buddy” who was his greatest companion.
Mr. Mathews entered the Glencoe Area Health Center on Friday
July 10. He was then transferred to the Hutchinson Area Health Center on
Friday, July 17 to stabilize his condition. Then he was admitted to the
Burns Manor Nursing Home on Thursday, July 23, where he died the next day.

He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers:
Orville, Marvin and Earl.
Eldor is survived by: wife, Mertle of Glencoe; children,
Dottie Sons of Gaylord, Larry Mathews and wife, Janice, of Green Isle, Linda
Schmerbauch and husband, Al, of Gaylord, Dean Mathews and wife, Kathy, of
Glencoe, Carol Muchow and husband, Milo, of Gaylord, Julie Mathews and friend,
Scott Tuchtenhagen, of Winthrop, Jeannie Mathews Schmidt and husband, Mark,
of Owatonna, Sherry Henkelmann and husband, Butch, of Glencoe; 18 grandchildren;
13 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters: Lorna Ehrke of Plato, Raymond
Mathews and wife, Willie, of Missouri, Alice Debner of Winsted, Norman Mathews
and wife, Dorie, of Glencoe, Hillard Mathews of Lester Prairie, Erwin Mathews
and wife, Ruth, of Glencoe; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Anna Mathews
of Glencoe, Ole Ernst of Lester Prairie, Lorna Guetzkow of Mayer, Gert and
Walter Coulter of Anoka, Herb and Liz Pinske of Minneapolis, Gordon and
Margaret Pinske of Bloomington, Ray and Martha Pinske of Apple Valley; as
well as many other relatives and friends.
The Johnson-McBride Funeral Chapel handled the arrangements.
