Kathryn Luhman obituary 4/20/99


Kathryn Luhman, age 90 of Howard Lake, died Tuesday, April
20, 1999.
Kathryn was born Aug. 8, 1908, in Addison, N.D., to John
and Katherine Jaiter Lahr, Sr. She was baptized March 9, 1909 by the Rev.
Charles Ackerman of St. John’s Lutheran Church in South St. Paul, Minn.
She was confirmed May 28, 1922 by the Rev. A. L. Oetjen at St. James Lutheran
Church in Howard Lake.
On June 5, 1932, Kathryn was united in marriage to Bernard
Luhman by the Rev. C. G. Seitz at St. James Lutheran Church. Their 60 years
together were blessed by the birth of five children.
Over the years, Kathryn was active in her church and community.
She was a member of the choir, a Sunday school teacher, member of the Lutheran
Women’s Missionary League (LWML) and the Naomi Guild.
Kathryn was very active and involved with long-time friends
in the Howard Lake area. She was truly a loving person and always ready
to help others.
Her most recent interest was cutting quilt blocks to make
blankets for those in need. She greatly missed her car after driving for
over 70 years without an accident.
Kathryn waited patiently for her 90th birthday, and thoroughly
enjoyed her celebration with over 300 relatives and friends.
Kathryn went peacefully to be with her Lord on April 20,
1999, at the age of 90 years, eight months and 12 days.
She will be greatly missed by her children: Stanley Luhman
and Rose of Maple Grove; David and Elaine Luhman of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa;
Elaine Stueven, Sandy and Craig Engel, all of Rio Rancho, N.M.; son-in-law,
Allen Carlson and Audrey of Monticello; 21 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren;
and one great-great-grandchild.
Kathryn is further survived by her sister, Eva Newman and
Wayne; sisters-in-law, Delores Lahr, Arlene Lahr, Irene Lindahl, Orella
Schmieg and Elmer; plus many other relatives and good friends.
Kathryn was preceded in death by her husband Bernard “B.
J.”; her parents; a daughter, Betty Carlson; son-in-law, Robert Carlson;
daughter-in-law, Mary Luhman; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild;
two sisters, Marie Kissner and Peggy Newman; three brothers, John Lahr,
Jr.; Philip Lahr and Peter Lahr; six brothers-in-law and four sisters-in-law.
Casket bearers were grandsons Keith Carlson, David Stueven,
Paul Stueven, Mark Stueven, Scott Luhman, Timothy Luhman, Daniel Luhman,
Joseph Luhman, Mark Luhman and Matthew Engel.
Honorary casket bearers were granddaughters, Connie (Carlson)
Borash, Kathy (Stueven) Force, Brenda (Luhman) Zackrison, Sarah Luhman and
Lisa (Engel) Stevenson.
A prayer service was at 8 p.m. Friday, April 23 with the
Rev. Gerhard C. Michael officiating. A church service was at 11 a.m. Saturday,
April 24, at St. James Lutheran Church with the Revs. Martin Schoenfeld
and Michael Nirva officiating. Special music was provided by a ladies choir
of the LWML. The organist was Nancy Butterfass. Interment was at the St.
James Cemetery on Dutch Lake.
Arrangements were by the Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home
of Howard Lake.
