Leland John Bergmann
Leland John Bergmann, age 85 of Glencoe, passed away on
Saturday, May 19, 2001, at the Glencoe Regional Health Services, at the
age of 85 years, eight months, and 11 days.
Leland was born in Belle Plaine on Sept. 8, 1915, the son
of John and Agnes (Klaustermeier) Bergmann. He was baptized Sept. 26, 1915,
at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Belle Plaine, by the Rev. Haupt, and confirmed
at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Lester Prairie, by the Rev. Spleiss, May
26, 1929. He attended schools in both Belle Plaine and Lester Prairie.
Leland was united in marriage to Voila Kottke at First
Evangelical Lutheran Church by the Rev. A. Streufert on May 22, 1938. Leland
and Viola farmed west of Glencoe for 27 years, before moving into Glencoe,
where they have resided for the past 28 years.
Employed as a custodian for the public schools, Leland
also owned and operated a school bus. He enjoyed the card club and playing
cards, especially Schafskopf. As an active member of First Evangelical Lutheran
Church, he served on the cemetery board.
Leland is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers,
Roland Bergmann, Melvin Bergmann, and Sylvester Bergmann; and four sisters,
Alinda Eickhoff, Viola Tonn Narr, Vinetta Tonn, and Leona Manke.
He is survived by his wife, Viola; two brothers, Harland
Bergmann of Ark., and Gilbert (Gudrun) Bergmann of Coon Rapids; sister,
Elenora Warner of Princeton; brother-in-law, Roy Manke of Roseville; sister-in-law,
Helen Bergmann of Princeton; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives
and friends.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, May 22, 11 a.m.,
at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Glencoe, with the Rev. Harvey
Kath officiating.
The organist was Mary Huebert, and the soloist, Lawrence
Biermann sang “On Eagles Wings.” The congregation sang “Softly
And Tenderly” and “Just As I Am.”
Casket bearers were Gale Hoese, Melvin Jungclaus, John
Drew, Chuck Schmidt, Randell Tonn, and Dick Manke. Visitation was Monday
evening, May 21, at the Johnson-McBride Funeral Chapel, Glencoe. Interment
was at the church cemetery.
