Duane (Buck) Ralph Engel
Duane (Buck) Ralph Engel, age 75 of Howard Lake, died Sunday,
Jan. 28, 2001, after a brief illness.
Duane was born April 7, 1925, at Howard Lake, the son of
Walter and Doris (Fiedler) Engel.
A life-long member of St. James Lutheran Church, Howard
Lake, he was baptized into the Christian faith May 10, 1925, by the Rev.
C. G. Seltz. He was confirmed in his faith April 2, 1939, by the Rev. E.
N. Seltz.
From 1944 to 1946, Duane served his country in the Merchant
Marines.
On June 22, 1946, Duane was united in marriage to Marilyn
Carlson at the Bethlehem Reformed Church in Maple Lake. Their 54 years together
were blessed with the birth of four children.
Duane and Marilyn made their home and living on a farm
north of Howard Lake. Don also worked construction, owned his own bulk milk
trucks, and enjoyed working at Howard Lake Motors with his son, Bruce.
As a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Duane served
on the counting committees.
He was a member of the Howard Lake Lions and American Legion
Post 145 of Howard Lake.
A favorite pastime for Duane was fishing and listening
to Minnesota Twins baseball while spending weekends at the lake near Eden
Valley. He also always enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
At the time of his death, Duane had reached the age of
75 years, nine months, and 21 days.
He was preceded in death by his father, Walter; three brothers,
Roger, Eugene, and Glen; and two grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife Marilyn, and his mother, Doris,
both of Howard Lake; children: Bruce (Debbie) Engel of Naperville, Ill.,
Craig (Sandy) of Rio Rancho, N.M., Cheryl (Gerry) Stueven of Buffalo, and
Robin (Bob) Hoffman of East Bethel; nine grandchildren: Jodi (Todd) Dalbec
of Buffalo, Jason Engel of Golden Valley, Lisa (Jim) Stevenson of Rio Rancho,
N.M., Tami (Jeremy) Jewell of Buffalo, Shelly (Doug) Watters of Elk River,
Matt Engel of Los Gatos, Calif., Scott Hoffman of East Bethel, Corey Stueven
and Kristy Stueven of Buffalo; and eight great-grandchildren.
He is further survived by one sister-in-law, Bertie Engel
of Cokato; two brothers-in-law, Sonny (Lola) Carlson of Maple Lake and Gary
(Lois) Carlson of Maple Lake; nieces, nephews, and a host of relatives and
friends.
Funeral services were Thursday, Feb. 1, at St. James Lutheran
Church, Howard Lake, with the Revs. Martin Schoenfeld and Michael Nirva
officiating. Special music was provided by soloist Marge Stueven, with Diane
Johnson serving as organist. Interment was at the Howard Lake Cemetery.
Duane’s grandchildren were pallbearers: Jodi Dalbec, Jason
Engel, Lisa Stevenson, Tami Jewell, Shelly Watters, Matt Engel, Scott Hoffman,
Corey Stueven, and Kristy Stueven.
A prayer service was held Wednesday, Jan. 31.
Arrangements were by Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home of Howard
Lake.
