Ella Fruetel
Ella Fruetel, of Lester Prairie, entered her eternal rest
Monday, April 28, at the Glencoe Regional Health Services long-term care
unit at the age of 94 years, five months, and two days.
Ella Fruetel was born Nov. 26, 1908, in Winsted Township,
the daughter of Herman and Ottilie (Paul) Birkholz.
She was baptized Dec. 27, 1908, at St. Peter’s Lutheran
Church by Rev. Buescher and confirmed at the same church April 9, 1922 by
Rev. Baumhoefener.
She grew up in the Lester Prairie area and attended District
No. 5 rural school in Bergen Township.
She was united in marriage to Henry J. Fruetel at St. Peter’s
Lutheran Church by Rev. J. Schert. Ella was an active member at the Evangelical
United Church of Christ and served as a Ladies Aid member for over 50 years,
where she was an honorary member prior to her death.
She volunteered as an election worker for the city and
assisted her husband when he served as mayor for 18 years.
Ella also worked as the phone girl for the Mobil Bulk Oil
business they operated for 30 years, and she was a cook at the Alice Haney
Rest Home for many years.
Ella enjoyed cooking and baking, gardening and taking care
of her flowers, and providing a loving welcome home.
Ella resided at Shade Tree Retirement Home in Brownton
for 10 years and had spent the last two years as a resident at the Glencoe
Regional Health Services long-term care unit.
Ella was preceded in death by her parents, her husband,
seven brothers: Fred, Herbert, William, Arnold, Herman, Martin, and Walter
Birkholz; and two sisters: Emma Paggen and Anna Seefeldt.
She is survived by two daughters: Helen (Ken) Gruenhagen
of Zapata, Texas, and Lois (Harold) Hoof of Hutchinson, six grandchildren:
Lynn (Steve) Richardson, Lee (Sharon) Gruenhagen, Susan (Wes) Olson, Steve
Gruenhagen, Patti (Ron) Myers, and Paula (Cory) Marchese; 10 great-grandchildren;
one step-great-grandchild; as well as other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be this evening at the Evangelical United
Church of Christ.
Funeral services will take place Tuesday, May 6, 2003,
at 2 p.m., at the Evangelical United Church of Christ in Lester Prairie
with Rev. William Baldwin officiating.
Marie Eischens will serve as organist, and the hymn selections
will be “The Lord’s My Shepherd.” “Amazing Grace,” and
“How Great Thou Art.”
Lois Hoof and Lee Gruenhagen will sing as duets “Softly
and Tenderly” and “Precious Memories.”
Casketbearers are Steve Gruenhagen, Lee Gruenhagen, Sue
Olson, Lynn Richardson, Melvin Wolter, and Leinhard Birkholz; and honorary
bearers are Patti Myers and Paula Marchese.
Interment will be at the Lester Prairie City Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Paul-McBride Funeral
Chapel in Lester Prairie.
