Jerome Keefe obituary, 5/26/05


Jerome L. Keefe, age 85 of Cheyenne Wells, Co., and formerly of Winsted, died Thursday, May 26, 2005.
Jerome was born Dec. 13, 1919 in Minneapolis, son of Daniel and Mary Keefe. They moved to Winsted when he was in the fourth grade.
After graduation from Holy Trinity High School, he went to St. Thomas College in St. Paul. Before entering medical school, he was drafted into the army. An officer there helped him get into medical school at the University of Minnesota.
Upon his discharge, he married Dorothy Kohler of Denver, Co. Sept. 18, 1945. Three boys, Daniel, Michael, and Barry were born of this union.
His wife died in 1952 from complications of polio.
On Sept. 13, 1955 he married Ellen Coe. They had two boys, Gerald and Kevin.
In 1992 the Cheyenne County Hospital was officially named Keefe Memorial Hospital. In 1997 Dr. Keefe was named Colorado Physician of the Year.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dan and Mary Keefe; brothers, Gervase and Daniel; father and mother-in-law, Lola and Duncan Coe; and Frank and Wilhemina Kohler; his wife, Dorothy; brothers-in-law, Iley Sexson, Duncan Coe, Joe Tolan, and Warren Schmidt; and sister-in-law, Phyllis Tolan.
He was survived by his wife, Ellen Keefe; sons, Dan (Monica); Mike (Sue); Barry; Gerald (Kathy); and Kevin. He is also survived by his brother, Fr. Keefe; sisters, Evelyn Sexson, Mary (Casimir) Stifter, and Dorothy (Bernard) Fasching; sisters-in-law, Charlene Schmidt, Angie Keefe, Loretta (Bill) Walker; and Billie Jean Scott. Also survived by 11 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were Tuesday, May 31 at Cheyenne Wells High School in Cheyenne Wells, Co. with Fr. Jaimes Ponce and Fr. Gerald Keefe officiating. Diane Harms served as pianist. Interment followed at the Fairview Cemetery in Cheyenne Wells.
Pallbearers were Dan Keefe, Mike Keefe, Barry Keefe, Gerald Keefe, Kevin Keefe, and Dr. Tom Newman.
Arrangements were handled by Brown Funeral Homes of Colorado.
