Leocadia ‘Codie’ Barrett Obituary – 10/19/07


Leocadia “Codie” Helen Barrett, age 92, of Winsted, died Friday evening, Oct. 19, 2007 at St. Mary’s Care Center in Winsted.

She was born Dec. 9, 1914 in Silver Lake, the daughter of George and Nancy (Cacka) Lewandowski, and grew up on a farm.

Codie and Arthur “Kiddle” Barrett were joined in holy marriage Oct. 21, 1936 in Silver Lake. God blessed their marriage with five children.

Codie owned The Beauty Cap Beauty Shop, which she operated out of her home for 20 years.

She was known for her sense of humor and “telling it like it is.” Codie enjoyed playing cards, bingo, puzzles, knitting and crocheting. In her earlier years, she enjoyed tending big gardens and growing potatoes.

A faithful member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted, Codie also belonged to the Prayer Chain, St. Anne’s Society, Holy Family Council 204, and the VFW Auxiliary,

In addition, she enjoyed being a member of the Chix-Chix card club with a few other ladies.

Codie is survived by her loving children: Jim (Jeanette “Jan”) Barrett of Alexandria, Judy (Ron) Bayerl of Winsted, Janet (Jerry) Carlson of Lebanon, Conn., Jack (Vonnie) Barrett of Howard Lake, and Jill (Brad) Bush of Winsted; 13 grandchildren; and 24 great- grandchildren.

She is further survived by a brother, Ambrose Lewandowski of Winsted; a sister, Clara McMahon of St. Paul; sisters-in-law Marge Lewandowski of Watertown, Cordie Lewandowski of Litchfield, and Loretta Klobe of Waite Park; and other relatives and friends.

Codie was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur “Kiddle” Barrett, June 5, 1979; her parents, George and Nancy Lewandowski; and two brothers, Ernie and Tom Lewandowski.

A Mass of Christian Burial took place Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 11 a.m. at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted. Father Brian Oestreich was the celebrant, and the organist was Alice Nowak. Interment followed at Holy Trinity Cemetery in Winsted.

Visitation was Monday, Oct. 22 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted. A VFW Auxiliary service took place at 4:30 p.m., followed by a combined St. Anne’s Society rosary and Holy Family rosary recited at 5 p.m.; and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

Casket bearers were Shaun Bush, Steve and Ron Lewandowski, and Mike, Mark, and Scott Barrett.

The Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted served the family.
