Leona Behrends Burns obituary, 4/23/07


Leona Behrends Burns, age 74, of Delano, died peacefully Monday, April 23, 2007 at her home after a long illness.
She was born March 6, 1933 to Joseph and Sophie Schaack Suter in Clara City, Minn.
Leona was a school bus driver in the Delano area for many years.
She was an animal lover and raised German Shepherds.
Leona was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Lynn Behrends; an infant son, Thomas Behrends; and brothers Leo Suter and Cecil Suter.
After Lynn’s death, Leona was married to James Burns in May 1998.
She is survived by her loving husband, James; her children, Scott (Annette) Behrends of Buffalo, Roberta “Bobi” (James) Meehan of Independence, Mark (Karen) Behrends, Matthew (Sandy) Behrends, all of Buffalo, and Peter (Patty) Behrends of Delano; stepchildren Debra (Robert) Mediger, James Burns Jr., Thomas Burns, and Pauline (Curt) Holz; five grandchildren, Anna, Kathryn, and Mary Martha Meehan, Rachel Behrends, and Nicholas Behrends; and eight step grandchildren.
Leona is further survived by her siblings, Sister Judine Suter OSB of Ogden, Utah, Mary (Milton) Prekker of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Roseann (Henry) Sechler of Fairfax, Va.; and her German Shepherd, “Bruno.”
Mass of Christian Burial was Saturday, April 28 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Delano. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery, Delano.
Visitation was Friday, April 27 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Iten’s Funeral Home in Delano, and continued Saturday for one hour at the church, prior to the Mass.
Arrangements were by Iten’s Funeral Home in Delano.
