Gerhard Walfred Hendrickson Obituary – 10/4/07


Gerhard Walfred Hendrickson, age 88, of Minneapolis, formerly of Dassel, died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007 at his home.

He was born Jan. 19, 1919 in Dassel, the son of Karlius and Ida Marie Olson Hendrickson. Gerhard was baptized and confirmed at Gethsemine Lutheran Church in Dassel.

He attended Washington Mills School District 31, grades one through eight, and Dassel High School for four years.

Gerhard was drafted into military service in WWII. He saw duty in Panama, Hawaii, New Guinea, and Philippine Island. Gerhard received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and many other medals.

He married Grace Freeman at Gethsemene Lutheran Church in Dassel Aug. 9, 1947. They were blessed with twin daughters, Shirley and Sharon.

Gerhard was preceded in death by his wife, Grace; grandsons, Donald and Brian; and siblings, Ellen, Violet, Wilton, and Ingwald.

He is survived by daughters Shirley (Dennis) Simpson, and Sharon (Kenneth) Blatz; grandchildren Julie (Nathan), Vicki (Brandon), and Jason; great-grandchildren Ashley, Brittney, and Jacob; step-grandchildren Melissa (Charlie) and Sarah; brother Clifford; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 11:30 a.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, with interment at Fort Snelling.

Visitation took place Oct. 8 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Bradshaw (McDivitt-Hauge) in Minneapolis, and continued Tuesday for one hour prior to the service at the church.
