Dorothy E. Hitchcock obituary, 4/10/07


Dorothy E. Hitchcock, age 94, of Chaska, died Tuesday, April 10, 2007 in Delano.
She was born in Waterbury, Conn., and spent her early years in New Haven, Conn., where she spent summers with her grandparents, William and Elizabeth Stone.
She graduated from Mt. Holyoke College in Massachusetts in 1934, worked for a few years as a teacher for the blind, and married Ed Hitchcock in 1938.
During her life, she lived in West Virginia, Connecticut, Bombay (India), and most recently, Minnesota.
Dot enjoyed sewing and reading, and traveled frequently throughout her lifetime, encircling the globe more than once.
She volunteered at her church and was a member of the General Federated Women’s Club, the Girl Scouts organization, and the American Association of University Women.
She was a very giving, caring person, a loving wife, mother, and sister, and a mainstay of her extended family.
Dot was preceded in death by her husband, Melville Edward Hitchcock (“Ed”), and a brother, Alvin Sperry.
She is survived by daughters, Peggy (John) Henrikson, Lisa (Jim) Blodgett, and Carolyn Hitchcock (husband Roy Jacobson); grandsons David Thiel (special friend Jill Seifert), Donn (Sandee) Blodgett, Dustin (Becky) Blodgett, and Eric Blodgett (fiancée Clare Reichl); and great-grandchildren Devin, Katelynn, Kaitlyn, and Tyler.
Dot is further survived by a brother, Robert (Hope) Sperry; sister-in-law Priscilla Sperry; nephews Tim (Lynne) Sperry, and Nathaniel (Teresa) Sperry; great nephews and niece Matthew, Andrew, Robin, and Elta; cousins Elizabeth Allen, Doris Hawthorne, Charles M. Stone, and William B.Stone, and special cousin-in-law, Dorothy (Schlichting) Reif.
Private services will occur at a later date in the Evergreen Cemetery in New Haven, Conn.
Local arrangements are being handled by the Iten Funeral Home in Delano.
