Gladys Viola Saewert Obituary – 06/15/09


Gladys Viola Saewert, age 96, of rural Delano, died Monday, June 15, 2009, at the Golden Living Center in Delano.

She was born June 8, 1913, to Albert and Effie (Prestidge) Ziebarth in Delano.

Gladys married William Saewert (of Iowa) May 7, 1932, in Minneapolis. They farmed together in Iowa for some time before coming to Delano to operate the Ziebarth family farm.

Gladys was active in the local Buffalo Farmers Union, acting as its secretary, until they sold the farm in 1968. She was a charter member of the Rockford Township Senior Center and volunteered for many years at the Delano Senior Center.

Gladys enjoyed snowmobiling and was a member of the Delano Sno’ Ramblers. A longtime member of United Presbyterian Church in Rockford, Gladys also enjoyed fishing, gardening, and traveling.

She is survived by her daughter, Judith Saewert of rural Delano; brother Lloyd Ziebarth of Mesa, AZ; niece Peggy Ziebarth; and nephew Donald Jensen.

Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, William, in 1975; a son, Charles in 1969; and sisters, Evelyn Jensen and Margaret Parent.

The funeral service was Thursday, June 18 at 10 a.m. at United Presbyterian Church in Rockford with Pastor Richard Newswanger officiating. Congregational hymns were “Amazing Grace” and “How Great Thou Art.” Kaitlyn Kavanaugh was the organist. Solosit Gail Sinkel sang “In The Garden” and “Precious Lord.” Interment was in Elmwood Cemetery.

Visitation was Wednesday, June 17 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Peterson Chapel-Buffalo Funeral Home, and continued Thursday one hour prior to the service at the church.

Casket bearers were Elmer and Christopher Abbas, Scott Kraunzer, Dennis Iverson, Jason Dreger, and Ryan Kral. Honorary bearers were Arnold Kral and Dave Compton.

The Peterson Chapel-Buffalo Funeral Home served the family.
