Vernon F. Strehlke Obituary – 5/1/09


Vernon F. Strehlke, age 80, of New Germany, died Friday May 1, 2009, at his residence.

He was born May 6, 1928, in Hollywood Township, the son of Martin and Malinda (Schubert) Strehlke. Vernon was baptized May 27, 1928, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Hollywood Twp., by the Rev. F.W. Ernst, and confirmed March 29, 1942, by the same.

Vernon was united in marriage to Darlene M. Karg Oct. 26, 1957, at Peace Lutheran Church in Hutchinson by the Rev. Kirsch.

A loving husband, dad and grandpa, Vernon was very active at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Hollywood Twp., taking part in the choir, and serving as chairman of the congregation and school board. He also served on the board of education at Mayer Lutheran for a period of time.

He thoroughly enjoyed working at Tonka Toys for the 23 years he spent there.

Vernon was a farmer and musician for all of his life; playing the trumpet for 70 years for local old tyme bands. He treasured his time hunting in Wyoming and fishing when he could.

Vernon was an avid collector of Allis Chalmers tractors, real and toy ones. He cherished going to his lake home.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Malinda Strehlke.

Vernon is survived by his loving family: wife Darlene; sons and daughters-in-law Mark and Natalie Strehlke of New Germany, Paul and Kathy Strehlke of Acworth, GA, James and Joni Strehlke of Mayer, and Barbara Strehlke of New Germany; grandchildren Jessica Strehlke and fiancé Jacob Hinderman, Nicole and Jacob Baumann, Vanessa Strehlke and special friend Joseph Blacketter, Aleks Strehlke, Erich Strehlke, Megan Strehlke, and Kate Strehlke; and step-grandchildren Maarten, Anneke and Julius Pronk.

He is further survived by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Harvey and June Karg of Hutchinson, Harlow and Wilma Karg of Brownton, Joy and Roger Erickson of Bird Island, Carlie and Kay Karg, Jeanne and Bryce Cassens, all of Hutchinson, Van and LeeAnn Karg of Dassel, Linda and Lenny Juncewski of Winsted, Jan and Gayle Karg of Dassel, Gwen Wickman of Hutchinson, and Todd and Cindy Karg of Hutchinson; nieces; nephews; and other relatives and friends.

The funeral service was Wednesday, May 6 at 11 a.m. at St. Mark Lutheran Church in New Germany, with the Rev. LeRoy LaPlant officiating. Interment was at St. Mark Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation took place Tuesday, May 5 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in Waconia with a chapel service at 7:30 p.m., and continued Wednesday for one hour prior to the service at the church.
