Bonnie C. Young Obituary – 7/10/09

Bonnie C. Young, age 74, of Waverly, died Friday, July 10, 2009, surrounded by family, after a nine-month courageous battle with lung cancer.

She was born July 4, 1935, in Minneapolis, to Cellia (Frush) and Richard Safely.

Bonnie attended Minneapolis community elementary and junior high schools, graduating from Washburn High School in 1953.

After graduation, she worked as a clerical assistant, nurse’s assistant, and purchasing agent in both business and education settings.

Bonnie married Harvey D. Young Jr. Dec. 28, 1957, and began raising a family in the Twin Cities area. In 1966, she and Harvey purchased a farm near Waverly, and began a life rich in faith, family, and friends.

Bonnie worked as the Waverly city clerk from 1973 to 1997. Waverly grew and changed during her tenure – adding infrastructure, parks, and facilities.

Bonnie gave countless hours to the many ministries at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, through her work with Women’s Circle 3, Council of Catholic Women, and Catholic education with parish youth.

Bonnie enjoyed her many friends, her dogs, working out-of-doors, lively discussions regarding current events, and the generous giving of her many gifts to family and friends. She championed for those who were hungry and homeless, unloved, disenfranchised and those, who like herself, were challenged by a visual impairment.

Bonnie devoted her life to her children, and is survived by them and their spouses: Barbara (Jim) Eckberg, Sue (Bruce) Jagodzinski, Patty (George) Reinert, Mary (Randy) Judd, Ann (Dave) Mills, Mike (Ruth) Young, Kate (Dean) Fasching, and Carol (Tom) Thurston. Bonnie adored her 25 grandchildren and two great grandchildren: Dan, Jon and Ben Eckberg; Jeff, Katie, Valerie and Jack Jagodzinski; Sara (Nate) and John Varner, Chris (Kate) Reinert, Jill, Liz and Abby Reinert; Mike (Jocelyn) and Vivian Lundeen, Brianna (Nick) Krebsbach; Sam, Joe, and Jacob Mills; Tom, Christe, and Jacob Young; Kirsten, Jen and Mitch Fasching; and Tyler and Paige Thurston.

She is also survived by a sister, Barbara King; in-laws Betty and Don Burns, Sara Sarid, and Joanie Young; many nieces and nephews; and special family friend Mario Vargas and his daughter, Marina.

Bonnie was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey; and sisters BetteLou Walton and Beverly Simpson.

Bonnie, along with Harvey, enjoyed a special relationship with the St. Charles Amish Community.

Hayes as the concelebrants. Tracy Durant and Brandon Aldrich were vocalists, and the organist was Mae Wannarka. Instrumentalist was Joy Kallenbach. Interment followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
