James Biggar Obituary – 6/12/2011


James Biggar, age 87, of Delano, died Sunday, June 12, 2011, at Haven Homes of Maple Plain due to congestive heart failure.

He was born Aug. 18, 1923, in Kilwinning, Scotland, the son of Thomas Biggar and Janet (Sharp) Biggar. James and his parents immigrated to the United States when he was 4 years old.

He was raised and attended school in the Darfur and Butterfield area, graduating from Butterfield High School in 1943.

James joined the US Navy, serving in the Pacific from 1943 to 1946.

He worked for a short while in California before returning to Minnesota.

He then enlisted in the US Air Force, serving from 1951-1955.

James married Lorraine Behlmer Sept. 6, 1953, at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in St. James, MN.

Following his discharge from the Air Force, James and Lorraine moved to St. James, MN, where he worked for the city of St. James electrical department and was a member of the VFW.

In 1974, James accepted the job of utilities superintendent for the city of Lake City, MN, where he was employed until his retirement in 1985.

James enjoyed camping, traveling, watching sports, and spending time with family and friends.

His wife Lorraine; brother Thomas; sister Mary; and parents preceded him in death.

James is survived by his sons, Mark (Renelle) Biggar and Scott Biggar, all of Delano; grandsons Nathan (Jessica) Biggar of Phoenix, AZ, and Travis (Mandy) Biggar of Minneapolis; granddaughter Stacy (Nate) Doering of Mankato; sisters-in-law Lorraine Behlmer and Donna Behlmer, both of St. James, MN; and five great-grandchildren, Cami, Max, Talan, Ethan and Colby.

Funeral services took place Thursday, June 16 at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Delano, with the Rev. Paul Marggraf officiating. Burial with military honors was at Mt. Hope Cemetery in St. James, MN.

Arrangements were by the Iten Funeral Home in Delano.
