Helen R. Fruetel Obituary – 2/21/2012


Helen R. Fruetel, age 88, of Alamo, TX, and formerly of Norwood Young America, died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012, at the Sterling House of Blaine.

A memorial service celebrating the her life will take place in May at the Friedens County Line Church of Norwood Young America, with interment in the Lester Prairie City Cemetery.

Helen was born Sept. 3, 1923, in Glencoe, the daughter of Peter and Nellie (Grimm) Vollmer.

She was united in marriage with Leslie “Les” Fruetel Feb. 8, 1942, at Friedens County Line Church by the Rev. Nussmann. The couple made their home on a farm in Young America Township, and later Hutchinson, before moving to Alamo, TX.

Helen suffered the death of her husband in November of 2007.

Since April of 2008, she had been a resident of Sterling House of Blaine.

Helen enjoyed quilting, crocheting, and sewing. She loved the time spent in her flower and vegetable gardens, attending Bible studies, volunteering for church activities, and visiting with friends.

Helen loved being a mother and grandmother, and cherished time with her family. She was very proud of going back to school at age 50 to earn her GED.

In addition to her husband, Les, Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Nellie Vollmer; her foster parents, Herman and Margaret Kroppen; a grandchild, Catherine Monroe; brothers Harold Vollmer, Ernest Vollmer, and Oliver Vollmer; a sister, Dorothy Vollmer; brother-in-law Byron Reha; and sisters-in-law Lorraine Vollmer and Dorothy Vollmer.

Helen is survived by her loving family; children Joyce Bachelor of Alamo, TX, Barbara Monroe and husband Eugene of Bluffton, SC, Margaret Fruetel and friend Mark Harris of Andover, and Larry Fruetel and wife Vicki of New Prague; grandchildren Michelle Bachelor, Richard Bachelor and wife Tamy, Daniel Bachelor, Pati Fairchild and husband Theron, Matthew Monroe, and Angela McDaniels; and great-grandchildren Sydney, Makenzie and Tanner Bachelor, Evan Monroe, and Boden and Annabelle McDaniels.

She is further survived by sisters Viola Mehlhop and husband Hillard of Ortonville, and Lorraine Reha of Minneapolis; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Mildred Feltmann of Norwood Young America, Wilfred Fruetel of St. Louis Park, Marcella Fruetel of Glencoe, Leonard and Sonja Fruetel of Cosmos, Ralph and Elaine Fruetel of Rifle, CO, and Vera Fruetel of Lester Prairie; as well as nieces, nephews, and many friends.
