Selwyn ‘Sive’ Ronning Obituary – 9/23/2013

Selwyn Myron “Sive” Ronning, age 87, of Lester Prairie, passed away peacefully Monday, Sept. 23, 2013, at his home in Lester Prairie with his loving wife, Shirley and step-daughter, Julie at his bedside.

Memorial services will take place Saturday, Oct. 5 at 11 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Waconia.

Selwyn was born Dec. 21, 1925, in Brookings County, SD, the son of Olai and Ida (Moen) Ronning. As a child, he moved with his family to Sioux Falls, SD.

Sive graduated from Washington High School in 1944.

Within 10 days after graduation, he entered the US Navy, June 7, 1944, at Omaha, NE. Sive served as a gunner in the South Pacific on LST 268, and later LST 7200, during World War II. He was honorably discharged May 15, 1946, at St. Louis, MO.

After the war, Sive attended radio and TV school in Kansas City, MO. He worked as chief radio engineer in Pierre, SD, and then for TV station KDLO in Garden City, SD. Sive then returned to Sioux Falls, and joined Ronning Co. in 1958. He retired in 1990.

Being an avid golf player since 1946, one of Sive’s main objectives after retirement was to play as much golf as physically possible. There were many times he would play two 18-hole rounds of golf in a day. Due to physical limitations, his last game of golf was in 2002.

Sive was a member of the Masons since 1951, the American Legion, and an active member of the Sioux Valley Wellness Center, which he enjoyed almost as much as his golf.

Sive and his wife, Shirley, were married Nov. 8, 1996. They were able to travel all over the US and into Europe, seeing all the places they had dreamed about.

Sive is survived by his wife, Shirley; his sister, Lavonne (Robert) Filipek; five step-children, Julie (Clancy) Gjerstad, Sidney (Mary) Larson, Philip (fiancée Nicole) Larson, Stephen (Lisa) Larson, and Sarah (Richard) Dennee; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, D. Wayne Ronning and Adrian Ronning.

In lieu of flowers, please direct memorials to Ridgeview Medical Center Hospice, 500 S. Maple St., Waconia, MN 55387.
