Martha A. Hayes Obituary – 12/28/2014


Martha A. Hayes, aka Cookie Grandma, age 88, of Delano, passed away Sunday, Dec. 28, 2014.

She was born July 29, 1926, in Little Falls, to Frank and Nettie (Drellack) Zilka.

Martha was united in marriage to Leland F. Hayes Oct. 18, 1947, at Ascension Catholic Church in Minneapolis. The couple lived and farmed in the Delano area.

Martha was preceded in death by her husband, Leland; and siblings Johanna Zyvoloski, Alois Zilka, Joseph Zilka, Henry Zilka, Anthony Zilka, Angeline Zilka, Ernest Zilka, Marion Potvin, and Lawrence Zilka.

She is survived by her children, Gaylen (Darlene), Sandra (Albert) Adickes and Colleen (Randy) Klaers; nine grandchildren: Michelle (Lyle) Peterson, Christine (Mike) Rogers, Brandon (Lorie) Gusse, Troy (Shelley) Hayes, Nicholas (Krista) Hayes, Randall (Kristina) Adickes, Kara (John) Czanstkowski, Aaron Klaers and Rilee Klaers; and 14 great-grandchildren: Sabel, Brooke, Dylan, Isabella, Logan, Bradley, Elleyia, Russell, Kendra, Kody, Leland, Lily, Levi and Lewis.

Martha is further survived by a brother, Edward (Joan) Zilka; sisters-in-law Ann Zilka, Lorraine Zilka, Genevieve Zilka, Gladys Hayes; and Mianna Varner; brother-in-law Roger Potvin; and many nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial took place Saturday, Jan. 3 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Delano, with private family interment at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.

Visitation was Friday, Jan. 2 from 4 to 8 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service, at the Iten Funeral Home in Delano; and continued Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the church, prior to the Mass.

Arrangements were with the Iten Funeral Home in Delano.
