Eugene ‘Curly’ Karels Obituary – 3/28/2015


Eugene “Curly” Bernard Karels, a longtime resident of Shoreview, died Saturday, March 28, 2015.

He was born Feb. 15, 1915, in Winsted.

Curly was proud to have served in the Navy, and was a World War II veteran.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret; and a son-in-law, George Rettner.

Curly is survived by wife, Lois; children, Margie Rettner, Gene (Pat), Trish (Dick) Krinke, Bill (Jeanne Smith), Kate (Bridget Serig) and Tom; 19 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

Curly was an accomplished musician, a member of the Musician Union, played with numerous bands including Whoopee John, Jules Herman and the Wally Olson Band, and appeared in the movie, “Grumpier Old Men.”

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

A Mass of Christian Burial took place Tuesday, April 7 at 11 a.m. at St. Odilia Catholic Church in Shoreview, followed by interment at Holy Trinity Cemetery, Winsted.

Arrangements were with the Holcomb-Henry-Boom-Purcell Funeral Home in Shoreview.
