Wayne E. Paulson Obituary – 9/8/2015


Wayne Elwood Paulson, age 89, of Dassel, died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015, at Augustana Lakeside Health Care Center.

He was born July 23, 1926, in Atwater, the son of Clarence and Florence (Frelander) Paulson.

Wayne attended grade school in Cosmos and Atwater, and graduated from Dassel High School in 1944.

He served in the US Army from 1944 to 1946, after which he attended Minneapolis Business College.

Wayne married Gladys Irene Johnson June 10, 1949, at the Mission Covenant Church in Dassel. God blessed their marriage with four sons; Timothy, Steven, Mark, and Michael.

Wayne was employed by Holm Brothers Hardware until 1964, when he took over the duties of insurance agent at the Dassel State Bank. In 1977, he purchased the Swanson Insurance Agency in Dassel.

He also drove school bus for Dassel Cokato School District, and served as a rural mail carrier in Dassel.

Wayne was a longtime member of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Dassel, and volunteered his services in various capacities. His faith in Jesus Christ was evident in his service, conduct, business actions, and his relationship to his wife, family, church and community.

He was active in Boy Scout Troop 253, serving as Scoutmaster and on the Troop Committee. He received the Silver Beaver Award from the Viking Council, and a “Mr. Scoutmaster” award from the local troop.

Wayne was also an active member in the Paul F. Dille Post No. 364 American Legion, and the Dassel Commercial Club.

The “Grandpa Campout,” started in 1990, included Grandpa, sons, and grandchildren. The family continues to gather for an annual campout in Wayne’s honor.

Christmas was a special time, when Wayne enjoyed making taffy, which he then gave out to friends and family. Camping vacations at Crosslake brought his children and grandchildren together for many years. Boy Scout summer camping was also a great time for him, along with woodworking, wood cutting, and gardening.

Wayne is survived by his wife of 66 years, Gladys; children Timothy (Candace), Steven, Mark, and Michael (Tammera); grandchildren Kimberly (Joe Norman), Mitchell, Annalisa (Jason Christensen), Conrad, Emelia (Nolan Pitlick), Nigel (Michelle), Dustin (Jessica) and Shania; and nine great-grandchildren: Parker, Paige and Peyton Christensen, Lilly and Claire Paulson; Mackenzie, Chloe and Ava Paulson; and Molly Norman.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers Winton, and James Paulson.

A funeral service took place Saturday, Sept. 12 at 1 p.m. at the Evangelical Covenant Church of Dassel with the Rev. Keith Carlson officiating. Interment was at the Dassel Community Cemetery.

Military honors were performed by the Paul F. Dille American Legion post of Dassel.

Visitation was Friday, Sept. 11 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Dassel, and continued Saturday, one hour prior to the service.

The Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel handled the arrangements.
