Virgil Lyle Hecksel, age 71, formerly of Watertown, passed away Monday, March 20, 2017, at Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia.
His funeral service will take place Monday, March 27, at 11 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Hollywood Township, New Germany, with the Rev. Dean Mahlum officiating. Interment will be at St. John Lutheran Cemetery.
There was visitation Sunday, March 26 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home in Waconia, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue Monday at the church, one hour prior to the service.
Casket bearers are David Hecksel, Daniel Hecksel, Mark Angier, Scott Strand, Russ Storms, Jeff Jopp, Jim Jopp, and Josh Hecksel.
Virgil’s grandsons are honorary casket bearers.

Virgil was born May 4, 1945, in Watertown, the son of Jerome and Stella (Kassulker) Hecksel. He was baptized May 20, 1945; and confirmed March 22, 1959, at St. John Lutheran Church in Hollywood Twp.
Virgil was united in marriage to Mavis Templin Nov. 11, 1967, at St. Mark Lutheran Church in New Germany by the Rev. Henry Weseloh.
Born and raised a farmer, Virgil continued farming most of his life.
He served in the National Guard when he was younger; otherwise, the rest of his life was spent in Carver County.
Virgil dearly enjoyed his family and spending time with them. He was dedicated to his faith and loved serving St. John Lutheran Church in many countless ways.
He continued to make friends wherever he went, and will be remembered for his infectious smile, his positive attitude, his patience, and being a good listener.
His last home was at Good Samaritan Center Westview Acres in Waconia, since November 2013.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, Jerome and Stella Hecksel; father-in-law and mother-in-law Herman and Marion Templin; and brother-in-law Gary Jopp.
He is survived by his loving family: wife Mavis Hecksel; children Dianna Hecksel and fiancé Mark Angier of Waconia, Danita (Scott) Strand of Telluride, CO, Donna (Russ) Storms of Cologne, David Hecksel and special friend Lynn Baldy of Watertown, and Daniel (Beth) Hecksel of Norwood Young America; grandchildren Mistique Hecksel-Read and fiancé Adam, Amanda Hecksel-Read and special friend Marcus, Shandy Strand, Evan Strand, Cody (Katelyn) Storms, Zackery Storms and special friend Emma, Megan Storms, Matthew Storms, Faith Hecksel, Noah Hecksel, and Kiersten Hecksel; and great-grandson Kyler Storms.
Virgil is further survived by his sister and brother-in-law, LaVonne and Richard Hoese of New Hope; brother and sister-in-law Orville and Barb Hecksel of Howard Lake; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Bernice and Dan Miller of Sioux Falls, SD, Ronald and Susanne Templin of Plato, Charles Templin and special friend Dee Brown of Montrose, and Roger and Ruth Templin of New Germany; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
