Delbert LeRoy Ufkes, age 86, of Hector, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2017, at his daughter’s home in Cokato.
He was born March 15, 1931, in Renville, to Peter and Arvena (Thompson) Ufkes.
Delbert grew up in Renville, and attended school there.
He served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War, from 1951-1953, and was stationed at Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, CA.
Delbert was united in marriage to LoisAnn Huls Feb. 22, 1955, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hector. They made their home on a farm south of Hector, and Delbert worked as a hired man for several farmers in the area. He continued to help when he could up until last fall.
Delbert was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hector and the Hector VFW.
He loved farming, playing cards, watching western movies and shows, and having coffee with his friends in the nearby towns. He also enjoyed sports, and loved watching his children and grandkids compete at their events.
Delbert is survived by four children: Mary Ann (and John) Ornelas, Lorian (Scott) Haas, all of Buffalo Lake, LuAnn (Paul) Beste of Cokato, and Jeff (and Julie) Ufkes of Buffalo Lake; daughter-in-law Vickie Ufkes (his late son Michael’s wife), of Hector; 21 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, LoisAnn; two sons, Michael, and Mark; one brother; and nine sisters.
Funeral services took place Saturday, Nov. 25 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hector, with the Rev. Jackie Cook officiating. Interment with military honors took place in the Hector City Cemetery.
There was visitation Friday, Nov. 24 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the church, continuing Saturday one hour prior to the services.
