Lloyd R. Vergin, age 88, of Rockford, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2017.
Lloyd’s journey in life began Aug. 27, 1929, in Rockford, IL, the son of Reinhold and Wilhelmina (Kading) Vergin.
Lloyd was preceded in death by his mother at two-and-one-half-years old, his father when he was 16 years old, and siblings: Vernon Vergin, Walter Vergin, Elmer Vergin, Howard Vergin, and Olga (Vergin) Schlief.
Lloyd graduated from Rockford High School in 1947, where he met the love of his life, Elizabeth (Betsy) Mitchell and courted her until she graduated. They married June 18, 1949.
Lloyd bought a milk route, picked up milk cans from local farmers, and delivered the milk to the Rockford Creamery until they started farming near Hamel for 10 years.
The dream of having a store began in 1957, on the farm. An old chicken coop was converted into the first “Vergin Sales,” selling baler twine, small tools, and miscellaneous household items.
In 1959, the family purchased a house and small store building on Highway 55 in Rockford. Lloyd’s “dream store” developed into a thriving business, selling furniture, appliances, TV’s, flooring, etc . . .
Lloyd also drove a school bus and was a volunteer fireman for Rockford. From 1950 to 1968, the family grew to 10 children; three boys and seven girls. Lloyd and Betsy both worked at the store, along with their daughter, Valerie, and son, Reinhold. Their son, Jeff also opened a TV repair shop within the store. In 1991, Reinhold purchased Vergin Sales and continues to operate the family business.
Lloyd and Betsy were avid fishermen and loved to play Euchre with their card-club friends. Lloyd enjoyed working at the store and continued being a strong presence at Vergin Sales until the summer of 2017, when his health began to decline due to advanced dementia.
Lloyd is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 68 years, Elizabeth (Betsy) Vergin; 10 children: Valerie (Jerry) Weyer, Vance (Laurie), Reinhold (Sharon), Jeff (Shelley), Veronica (Steve) Olson, Vicky (Dave) Knecht, Sandy (Travis) Kramer, Cheri (Darryl) Gullickson, Stacie (Jeff) Beyer, and Tammy Vergin Schellenberg; 30 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.
