Richard was born Sept. 22, 1935, in French Lake Township, to Wayne and Lillian (Lantto) Barberg. He grew up in Cokato, was confirmed at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Cokato, and graduated from Cokato High School with the class of 1954.

Dick enlisted in the Army during the Korean War and served as a tank commander at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO, Ft. Hood, TX, and Ft. Knox, KT.

He was united in marriage to Rose Marie Lorentz Aug. 24, 1957, at the First Presbyterian Church in Howard Lake. The couple moved to Menomonie, WI, while Dick earned a degree in industrial arts and drivers education from the University of Wisconsin-Stout.

Rose and Dick lived in Casco, WI for 36 years, where Dick taught at the Luxemburg-Casco schools. Upon retirement, they built a home on the property of Rose’s family farm in Stockholm Township, near Howard Lake.

He loved trees, having planted and transplanted many of them over the years. Dick also enjoyed time spent cutting and milling lumber in Alexandria with his cousin, Dan.

They traveled to Germany and Central Europe in 1976; and visited Sweden and Finland in 2006. While there, they were able to see where the Barberg family was from and met many relatives.
