Kenneth H. Mackenthun Obituary – 8/27/2018

Kenneth Herbert Mackenthun, age 86, of Plato, passed away Monday, Aug. 27, 2018, at Glencoe Regional Health Services Long Term Care.

He was born Jan. 3, 1932, in Hamburg, the son of Annie W. (Oelfke) and Edward D. Mackenthun. Kenneth was baptized as an infant Jan. 10, 1932, and was confirmed in his faith as a youth April 21, 1946, both at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hamburg.

Kenneth attended Emanuel Lutheran School, and was a graduate of the Central High School class of 1950.

He was united in marriage to Marilyn Bentz June 6, 1953, at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hamburg. The couple made their home in Plato, and their marriage was blessed with four sons, Jeff, James, Randy, and Rod. Kenneth and Marilyn shared over 65 years of marriage.

Kenneth was a lifelong farmer.

He was a lifetime member of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hamburg, where he served as a trustee and elder. He was also a lifetime member of the Glencoe VFW Post #5102.

Kenneth enjoyed his time outdoors, and his profession as a farmer allowed him to spend plenty of time there. He took pride in raising his family and in doing so, made certain that both his faith and work ethics were instilled in his boys.

In his spare time, he would relish the opportunity to get a round or two of Sheephead or 500 in – take your pick, he was up for it! He also enjoyed the occasional Twins games, Sunday polka music, and a good old-fashioned Clint Eastwood western.

Kenneth’s most cherished time, though, was spent with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Mackenthun of Plato sons Jeff Mackenthun and his wife, Katherine, of Waconia, James Mackenthun and his special friend, JoAnn, of Pine River, Randy Mackenthun and his wife, Gina, of Lester Prairie, and Rodney Mackenthun and his wife, Kathy, of Plato; and grandchildren Amanda Panek and her husband, Mike; Jeffrey Mackenthun, Scott Mackenthun, Josh Mackenthun, Justin Mackenthun, K.R. (Kenneth Randy) Mackenthun and his wife, Kayla, Danielle Mackenthun, Anna Mackenthun, Abby Mackenthun, and Michael Mackenthun.

Ken is also survived by great-grandchildren Sydney Panek, Claire Panek, Graham Panek, and Ava Mackenthun; a brother, Gene Mackenthun and his wife, Sharon, of Plato; sisters-in-law LaVerna Mackenthun of Glencoe, Elvera Mackenthun of Norwood Young America, Lilah Mackenthun of Glencoe, Betty (Kenny) Feltmann of Lester Prairie, and Judy (Robert) Mueller of Young America; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Annie Mackenthun; parents-in-law Harry and Lorna Bentz; sisters Leona (Clarence) Bruers, and Roma (Hilton) Wolter; and brothers Clem Mackenthun, Hillard (Marlys) Mackenthun, Harvey Mackenthun, and Weldon Mackenthun.

Funeral services took place Friday, Aug. 31 at 11 a.m. at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hamburg, with interment in the church cemetery.

There was visitation from 9 to 11 a.m. at the church, prior to the service.

Arrangements were with Johnson-McBride Funeral Chapel, Glencoe.
