Velma Nus, 96

A memorial service will take place Saturday, April 7, 2018 at 1 p.m. at Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home of Howard Lake, with visitation one hour prior to the service, and a time of fellowship immediately following the service at the Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home.

Velma Nus, age 96, of Howard Lake, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018.

She was born Jan. 4, 1922, in Sheldahl, IA, the daughter of Leroy and Ursul (Higginbotham) Ringgenberg.

Velma graduated from Buckeye Union High School, and attended Arizona State Teachers College for two years before moving back to Iowa in 1942.

She was married to Fred Nus Aug. 9, 1942, in McCallsburg, IA, and they celebrated 70 years of marriage Aug. 9, 2012. Fred and Velma made their home in three states throughout their marriage; Iowa, Colorado and Minnesota, and were blessed with three children, James, Robert, and Marcia.

Velma was a very active member of the United Methodist Church in Howard Lake, where she sang in the choir and served as choir director for many years. She was currently a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Howard Lake.

Gifted with many talents and abilities, Velma enjoyed teaching piano throughout her married life. She enjoyed taking art lessons, and canvas oil painting was a favorite hobby for many years. She also enjoyed reading, sewing, gardening, and camping, and especially loved cooking and baking for her family.

Velma’s friends meant a great deal to her, and she often mentioned having coffee with the “coffee group” downtown and playing various card games, especially bridge, with dear friends. She also enjoyed spending time with family playing board or card games, including Scrabble and Tripoley.

Velma is survived by sons Jim (Lori), and Bob (Mary); daughter Marcia (Andy); 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; nephew, John (Anne); and niece, Dreanna.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred, in 2012; her parents; a brother-in-law, Loren; a sister-in-law, Phyllis; and a nephew, Edward.

Memorial service arrangements are pending and will take place at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by the Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home of Howard Lake.
