Glenna M. Schmidt, 95

Glenna Marie Schmidt, age 95, of Mayer, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2018, at St. Mary’s Care Center in Winsted.

She was born Aug. 13, 1923, to Berthold and Emma (Borchardt) Schumacher.

Glenna was baptized Sept. 2, 1923, at Zion Lutheran Church in Mayer, by Rev. Erthal. As a child, she attended Zion Lutheran School. Glenna was confirmed in her faith March 21, 1937, by Rev. Schwandt.

Glenna’s dad (Bert) encouraged her to go on to high school, and she graduated from Watertown High School June 2, 1941. She attended Steven’s Seminary in Glencoe, receiving her teacher training certificate June 3, 1943.

Glenna taught at several country schools, later ending up in Mayer Watertown Public School District.

Glenna was united in marriage to Alvin “Pete” Schmidt Nov. 27, 1943, by Rev. Schwandt at Zion Lutheran Church in Mayer. This marriage was blessed with three children; Sharon, Eunice, and James.

After raising her family, Glenna went back to Mankato State College to get her four-year degree. She graduated July 13, 1973, at the age of 50.

Glenna enjoyed teaching and working with special needs children.

She was an active member in Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, weekly Bible studies and as a Sunday school teacher.

Glenna enjoyed quilting, loved working on family history, spending time with family, cooking, gardening, and flowers. In 2007, she received the Mayer Senior of the Year award.

Glenna entered the nursing home in February 2014, due to falling and having strokes at her home.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin “Pete” Schmidt; daughter Eunice Schmidt; son James Schmidt; parents Berthold and Emma Schumacher; baby sister Lacorda Schumacher; and a brother, Ruben Schumacher.

Glenna is remembered by her loving family: daughter Sharon McPadden and her husband, David of Dent; daughter-in-law Maureen Schmidt of Ames, IA; and grandchildren Christine Nelson and husband Mike of Maple Grove, Bryan McPadden and wife Mary of Omaha, NE, Lynse Allen and husband Mike of Renton, WA, Chelsey Mack and husband Dustin of Appleton, WI, and Brad Schmidt and wife Vanessa of Omaha, NE.

She is further survived by great-grandchildren Sheraye Ternus and husband Jim of Perham, Sean McPadden of Maple Grove, Shelby Strube of Maple Grove, Ava, Peter and Warner Schmidt of Omaha, NE, Jensen and Bryant Mack of Appleton, WI, Josslyn Allen of Renton, WA, and Samantha and Joey Beck Best of Omaha, NE; great-great-grandchildren Charolette “Charlie” and Nolan Ternus of Perham; brother and sisters-in-law Alex and Helen Schumacher of Blaine, Opal Schumacher of Mayer, and Gladys Schmidt of New Germany; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

A funeral service took place Wednesday, Dec. 19, at 11 a.m at Zion Lutheran Church in Mayer with the Rev. Adam Gless officiating. There was visitation from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Interment was in Zion Lutheran Cemetery.

Casket bearers were Bryan McPadden, Brad Schmidt, Sean McPadden, Vance Schumacher, Dale Schumacher, Nate Kellermann, and Chase Feltmann.
