Marlis M. Furuseth, 81

Marlis Margaret Furuseth, age 81, of Detroit Lakes, formerly of Howard Lake, passed away Sunday, April 21, 2019, at Regions Hospital in St Paul.

A memorial service and Celebration of Life will take place Saturday, July 6 at 11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church, 912 Lake Avenue, Detroit Lakes.

Marlis was born Feb. 22, 1938, in Thief River Falls, to Ferdie and Anna Margaret (Sandberg) Anderson.

She was baptized and confirmed at Black River Lutheran Church in Wylie, MN.

Marlis attended elementary and junior high school in St. Hilaire, MN; and high school in Thief River Falls, graduating from Lincoln High in 1955.

After graduating, Marlis worked as a secretary in St Paul, Thief River Falls, and Moorhead.

She was united in marriage to Jerome Furuseth July 18, 1958, in Moorhead, where they, continued their careers and started their family.

Most of their years were in Erskine, Waubun, and Howard Lake, raising their six children.

Marlis worked at the Mahnomen and Howard Lake nursing homes, and St John’s Lutheran Church in Howard Lake, and retired in 2006, after years as a para professional at Howard Lake schools.

After retirement, Marlis and Jerry moved to Mesa, AZ and lived there for 12 years, where they had many special friends at Trail Riders Park. Marlis moved back to Minnesota in January 2019.

Marlis was loved by all who knew her. She was a very special wife, mother, grandmother, sister, sister-in law, aunt, and friend, with a very kind and loving spirit.

For years, Marlis was active in her children’s sports, music, school functions, as a Sunday school teacher, secretary, and member of the choir at her church, in Bible study, as a Boy Scout leader, and a member of the Red Hats Club.

Marlis is survived by her six children, Lori Luhman (Sy Parisien), of Fargo ND, Nanci (Lester) Thomas, of Indian Hills CO, Joel (Shani) Furuseth of Rogers, AR, Kari (Luke) Reese of Shafer, MN, Barry (Ali) Furuseth of Rogers, AR, and Thor (Theresia) Furuseth of Gilbert; AZ; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is further survived by her sister, Sharon Bergsgaard, of Crookston; brother-in-law Lannis Bergsgaard of Crookston; sisters-in law Ethel Walker of Bemidji, and Milly Furuseth of Thief River Falls; and several nieces and nephews.

Marlis was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry, in 2012; and her parents, Ferdie and A. Margaret Anderson.
