Don Holmgren, 89

Donald “Don” Holmgren, age 89, of Darwin passed away Tuesday, June 18, 2019, at Hutchinson Health.

Donald Holmgren was born Aug. 30, 1929, in Litchfield, to Albin and Pearl (Madson) Holmgren. He was baptized as an infant at home and later confirmed in his faith as a youth at Arndahl Lutheran Church near Grove City. He received his education in Litchfield, and was a graduate with the Litchfield High School class of 1947.

Donald entered the Army National Guard Reserves Jan. 16, 1951, in Litchfield. He was honorably discharged Aug. 12, 1952, at Camp Rucker, AL, with the rank of Sergeant First Class.

Donald moved to St. Louis Park upon his employment at Sears Roebuck in Minneapolis. He worked there as a warehouse supervisor for the catalog division for 37 years. After retiring, he moved to Lake Washington in Darwin. In recent years, he enjoyed spending five months out of the year in Hawaii.

Donald was a member of the American Legion Litchfield Post 104 for the last 67 years and a longtime member of the Lake Washington Improvement Association. He was also a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Grove City.

Donald was an avid Minnesota sports fan. He especially enjoyed watching the Minnesota Vikings and the Minnesota Twins.

Donald loved life at the lake. He taught several generations of friends and family to water ski. He was a skillful skier and teacher, who taught hundreds of people to ski. He water skied until he was 70 years old.

When Donald needed assistance with his daily care, he entered Woodstone Senior Living Center Feb. 28, 2017, where he resided until his passing. Blessed be his memory.

Donald is survived by his sister, Arlene Williams of Litchfield; numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends; and his Lake Washington family, the Hansons, the Madsens, and the Underhills.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Albin and Peal Holmgren; sister, Phyllis Johnson and her husband, Marvin; brother, Allan Holmgren; niece, Sharon Nelson; and brother-in-law, Cedric Williams.

A funeral service took place Saturday, June 22, 2019, at 10 a.m. at Hantge Funeral Chapel in Darwin, with interment in Arndahl Lutheran Cemetery in rural Grove City.

Clergy officiating: Pastor Kelly France; casket bearers: Curt Nelson, Les Johnson, Kevin Johnson, Brian Johnson, Mike McCoy, and Andy Haefner.
